We can count the extras marching to captivity for a minimum figure, and multiply the transporter rescue batches of 20 or less by the number of transports we get by dividibg the action into transport-long chunks for a maximum figure. The ballpark we end in is a couple of hundred survivors at most - but fewer might fit aboard the Franklin for the trip home (we see virtually nobody outside the bridge of that ship after the crash on Yorktown).

As Kirk's big ship originally probably held thousands, we are talking about literal decimation of his men, women and assorted others, then. Unless Kirk offloaded much of his crew on Yorktown for the rescue mission, that is.

I think we're supposed to pretend there were more beamups between scenes we saw, but being very literal it looked like about 20-30 survived out of a crew of either 400 or 1100, depending on your source.

We saw a LOT of people killed or blasted out into space during the attack.

There must have been at least 60-80 shown when they’re marching people into the holding cells on Altamid - so I think it’s safe to say there were additional beam-outs we didn’t see.

Personally, I like to think they left a lot of folks on Yorktown since it was supposed to be a relatively simple rescue mission.

Mine as well, as I thought that Kirk wanted to give the majority of the crew the opportunity for shore leave.

And I suppose the ship's historian, records officer, night shift yeomen (cross-training aside) probably stayed on Yorktown.

Then again, Kirk's ship was uniquely equipped to penetrate the Rubble Nebula - supposedly the best Yorktown had achieved until that point were the Magellan probes. There would be scientific weight to the mission, then, and perhaps a reason to actually embark extra personnel. It's not as if the traitress' cover story called for the evacuation of huge numbers of people, after all, or suggested the presence of great danger.

OTOH, Krall was motivated to capture lots of people to sate his hunger. Perhaps those blown out through the holes made by his minions were in fact mostly captured alive? The ultimate limiting factor in ultimate survival need not be Scotty's ability to beam 'em out, or the internal volume of the Franklin, either: hundreds might have been left behind without Kirk knowing, unharmed by the mindless drones that remained on Altamid when their bloodlusty master departed. But such variables would be largely external to the story, whereas the ideas that Kirk would leave people ashore for leave or take on extra scientists stem from the plot itself.

i actually remember cringing when i first saw the film thinking about the poor enterprise crew crammed below decks aboard the franklin as it's crashing into yorktown square. hope they're alright.

think there were any crew members still aboard the star drive section? if i'm remembering correctly, the film never depicts its fate, just the separation and crash of the saucer...

That's pretty much how I saw it. I think one of the reasons the Enterprise went to Yorktown in the first place was for some downtime for everybody and Kirk took only his senior staff and a skeleton crew with him to Altamid. There might have been only around a hundred on the Enterprise at the time, IMO.

We see tons of escape pods leaving the engineering section. Earlier in the battle, some shuttles try to launch but are kamikazed in the bay.

    Then why was Sulu on-board?

There certainly would have been other helmsmen on the ship, and he had every reason to want to spend more time on Yorktown, so if it was a simply there and back mission ...

More likely the Enterprise was carrying it's full compliment.
The Enterprise's survivors could have been spread over a large area of the planet, out of Krall's immediate reach, but also out of Kirk's. When Kirk left in the Franklin, there were likely many Enterprise crew still on the planet.
Given who was in command of Enterprise at the time, and who didn't order all of Enterprise's transporter rooms to beam up as many Vulcan's a possible once he realize what was going to happen, no neither Kirk's nor Pike's fault.

We might argue that Sulu at this point (and in this reality) is a crack pilot indispensable for this very mission... Which really is supposed to be just a short hop, for all its fancy flying. Perhaps Sulu was considering getting off this cursed ship for good, and was buying his freedom by doing this final service to Kirk?

Good point in any case. As for the crew perhaps dispersing after evacuation, it instead seems there's rather mysterious concentrating going on. Why does everybody we see (including the empty saucer) end up right on top of Krall's lair when there is a whole planet to choose from? Do all the bits of the ship, pods and saucers and shuttles, have "converging on one spot" as the default evac mode, and Krall pulling some of the pods to his lair results in all the rest ending up there, too?

I dunno'... they could have randomly beamed up people as long as they were in Orbit... The Enterprise has plenty of cargo space...
Instead they beamed up the elder council (at least those who didn't get crushed by giant statues), and basically flipped everyone else off....

Pretty sure they said he was needed to navigate the Necro Cloud.
