Discovery isn't ruined for me in any way by being a reboot Trek universe. I love Gotham, but I don't try and force it to be a prequel to any of the Batman movies.
There's plenty of people who consider the show to be as the producers have said it is: a prequel set in the Prime Universe. In fact, I would say more than the ones who in their own heads don't like it to be considered as Star Trek or in the Prime Universe.
End of the day, the show makes money, it gets to be on air and spawn further shows. And if the show has to appeal to the modern audience and be this way, then that's the way it's gonna be. If you don't like the show as it is, really, you're railing against what millions of others like or would like today. I'm sure we'll see more TV shows coming up in the next few decades which we won't like because they would appeal to the young people then, and we would be oldies lamenting how shows just don't do it right anymore.
Art is a dictatorship and needs money to survive. Any amount of head canonizing isn't gonna change that.
Just my 2 cents.
