People who are offended (by STD) are looking for a reason to be offended.
I don't think people are offended. It's just hard to claim objectivity when you use that acronym. In fact when people start by calling the show "STD" what follows is very rarely complimentary.

Sure it is. You're trying to pigeon-hole everyone that uses a certain acronym. When dislike for the show knows no acronym bounds. :techman:

You're misrepresenting what I said.

The fact that people who call you a derogatory name don't like you is unrelated to the fact that other people may not like you as well.

Rarely, I'll grant. But not always. I'm a lifelong Star Trek fan, and it has instilled in me that we all need to move past our prejudices and embrace a future that is welcoming and understanding to all.

When I see people unfairly demonized because they offhandedly used the wrong abbreviated terminology, and whatever their input tossed aside because "they must be one of those" types of people, I get an adverse reaction in my gut.

This is not right. You know this, I know this, we all know this. Those using the STD acronym are human beings, fans of Star Trek to varying degrees, including across the spectrum towards Discovery.

I will defend to my dying days the rights of all Star Trek fans, of all mankind really, to use the STD acronym. This is the hill I will die on, if need be.

Not really. In my experience around the interwebs "STD" referring to "Star Trek Discovery" is rarely complimentary and often follows with a joke related to "Sexually Transmitted Diseases." It's not looking to be offended-it's experience of that acronym not meant with any endearment.

Epic.

Hmm...

I tend to use DSC or Disco, but I've been known to throw around the odd STD.

:borg:

For the record, I don't find people calling it "STD" offensive. I only use it as a means to gauge what other people probably think of the series. Since, as has been stated by others, people who call it "STD" are usually -- note that I said usually -- detractors. I'll admit that no gauge is perfect. But I truly don't find calling it "STD" offensive.

What really gets me going is when people use Discovery and the make-up of it to start complaining about "Social Justice Warriors". That's what really gets me going. And that's because it extends far beyond disagreements about Star Trek and into extreme (to put it mildly) political disagreements. It's why I won't post in TNZ. I had enough arguments with people I disagreed with politically on Facebook and in person. It was ugly. I unfriended and disassociated myself from several people because of the 2016 Election. Some of it I regret and think was very unfortunate, some of it I don't...

... compared to that, people calling DSC "STD" barely registers on my radar at all.

Anyone who ever claims "objectivity" on a matter of taste, or concerning what they do or do not like, is either lying or doesn't understand the definition of the word.
Alright, I was speaking on a colloquial non-formal level. What we usually mean when we say "objectivity", IE lack of obvious prejudice, that sort of thing.

That would be fairness and detachment.

It's fair to dislike something, even to dislike it intensely, if you think it's poorly done, not worth doing, wrong, dangerous etc. Objections to that are often thin-skinned and defensive.

STD is a couple of those things.

Though part of me wants to include my thoughts on the matter, I can't be bothered with the ensuing tirade of abuse I'd face from fans of the show for voicing an opinion, so I'll keep quiet.

^ So, you'll just post a passive-aggressive comment instead of giving a straightforward answer? Much better.

You know, you could just say which abbreviation you use. It's not even actually expressing an opinion, though you're perfectly welcome to do that too.
That reminds me of the people that keep saying "ATM machine".
The ATM machine is the thing where I type my PIN number into the LCD display when I get my checks from the Department of Redundancy Department.

Sounds like a future where starships look like the insides of non-nondescript hotels, with lot's of beige coloring. And ship's captain feel the need to provide the ship's psychiatrist a seat on the bridge right next to his own.

I still don't get this, although I've heard of it. Do people actually feel the need to surround themselves solely with people who think exactly like they do?

I voted for Trump, and I have family and friends who did as well. And I have family and friends who voted for Clinton or third party candidates. It would never occur to me to push someone who is (for example) a close friend of multiple years, out of my live, solely over them voting differently in a election.

How does that work in some peoples heads?

TOS, TNG and DS9 are the only shows I abbreviate, as they're three worded subtitles that makes sense, whereas I refer to the other shows as VOYAGER, ENTERPRISE, and DISCOVERY.

But when it's crunch time, I more often than not use DISCO.
