Fussing about abbreviations or taking offense at them is so childish that I have difficulty taking anyone who does it seriously. But then, how seriously can anyone take the show?
DSC. It's one of the two official abbreviated designators for the series (the other being DISCO), and there's never been another series in the history of the franchise where the official designator hasn't been used. Anyone trying to 'buck that' by referring to the series as anything else, but especially 'STD', is just doing so because they don't like the series and think it's a clever way to diss it without appearing to diss it, but it's not clever, it's obnoxious.
Nope. Some people using STD are not doing it because they hate the show. Do you think people calling Voyager 'VOY' instead of 'VGR' hate the show? VGR is the official CBS abbreviation you know.
How about taking each person as an individual instead of trying to assign a label to them based on an acronym?
There's TOS, which (as I understand it) was a creation of the fan base, and not something that the franchise owners came up with, they just eventual started using It. How many different short-hand identifiers were bandied about before TOS was generally accepted?
No it isn't. https://twitter.com/jvancitters/status/756983274208198656 (this guy is the head CBS Star Trek department or something.) It's also called that in the Official Encyclopedia.
But, as demonstrated above, "STD" is like "Uranus." There's almost no way to use it in a sentence without provoking snickers.
And yet the planet's still named Uranus. We know, of course, that by the 30th century it will be renamed Urectum.
