Chris Carter thinks this makes sense, so that's what we got...

Not bad. Not good. Mediocre. But, as an ending to the series, better than expected actually--but yet still lame as the end of the series. So, much running around and silly excuses for why they couldn't talk (much) with their son. Wasn't satisfying. So much wasted time for the ending. Quick kills that just kind of happened.

But, as an ending for the X Files specifically, it was better than expected given the recent history of the show. End it now and be done.

It's no wonder Gillian Anderson wants out, it's been pretty lackluster all season in regards to Scully.
Episode was poop. I'm enjoying the attitude of "the episode was meh but could have been much worse" on this thread. That's the result of 25 years of exponentially tedious mythology, everyone just seems kind of glad that they can't even be bothered to get annoyed by any of it.

I liked how William (such a memorable role) had every super known to man for some reason (So was that trucker planning on doing something to him or what?)
I also liked when Reyes got Kryceked and Skindred did his car dive.

So when Scully reveals she is pregnant again, why do she and Mulder both agree it's impossible? Are they implying they haven't been sleeping together and it's like an immaculate conception or something? Or that Mulder's had the snip?

I think they missed a trick when CSM was killed again. Mulder should have set him on fire and said "Got a light?"
Or after pushing him into the water he should have said "No Morley mr nice guy". You know, something classy.

I've heard Chris Carter is writing a book where he explains everything, the working title is Mein Kampf V.

P.S. I'm mostly just really happy they resolved that teeth falling out storyline.

    I said out, dammit!
In that alleyway, Skinner ran past a stairway he could have run up and been safe. He could have jumped on TOP of the car he dove under and been safe. Why did he shoot Monica and not CSM?

As for the pregnancy, didn't they have sex a few episodes ago? I recall they were in the same bed, and she turned to him with a wry smile.

That's pretty much it! Plus, throw in a good amount of relief that it was actually more of a wrap up rather than cliffhanger designed to prolong the thing even more. As a story though, it was bland. Not much too it. So, the relief is more over what it wasn't.

Agreed, the whole scene was stupid.

They said that last season, but then in the season premiere they did seem to go back to the aliens. I think they even make a quick reference to them not invading after all.

Yeah, you're right. The spaceship people said that the aliens don't want a planet that we already destroyed. So teh show contradicts itself after every season. Cool.

Meh... one cliche line after the other. I saw no point in the episode, there was no plot, just people running around.

I'll just keep the hangman episode from this season.

3.43 million is the rating for the finale. Down from 5.15 in the season premiere, 7.6 in last season's finale, and 16.19 in last season's premiere.

Yeah I remember that, the depiction of their relationship is just so all over the place that I don't know how I'm supposed to interpret their interactions in moments like that.

So if we are saying they have slept recently, then why would they both agree that it's impossible for her to be pregnant. I realise she's Catholic, but she's a medical doctor too.

Nothing like a new baby to help you instantly get over the death of your firstborn.

Wasn't it always supposed to be impossible for Scully to conceive?
That would make a second time be even more impossible than the first.

They could also be implying that she's gone through menopause.

I'm with her. It was a pitiful send off for all characters involved.

Same here. It was terrible. I'm ashamed of it.

Sadly nope on the menopause bit. CC said it was a pregnancy.

This is one heck of a read. I was speechless after reading it.

Okay, so that wasn't exactly a cliffhanger, but it was far from a resolution. Anticlimactic would be the word, but do we really want neat and tidy answers on a show like X-Files. Still, I was kind of expecting aliens.

It was definitely extremely and oddly violent. Not just the bits where William exploded people, but Mulder seemed uncharacteristically Dirty Harryish-- and weirdly capable for a guy who is not generally an action hero, who has been retired for years until recently, and who is kind of on the old side. He's about a year older than me, and I must confess that I would be more out of breath after fighting and killing a half dozen commandos. He also shot the guy behind the desk in the head. And his dispatching of CSM was pretty intense. Although one has to wonder if CSM can really ever be killed-- I couldn't help but notice that he took a bunch of bullets to the chest and then had to be pushed off the pier, whereas a normal person would have been blown backward, and probably in half, by the first shot.

So now both Scully and Mulder know the truth about William's origin (and it surprised me that that was not a lie), which seemed to make it much easier for them to deal with his apparent demise, despite their years of emotional investment-- not to mention Mulder's sudden decision to define himself by fatherhood. But, just in time, Scully is pregnant again and Mulder is (almost certainly) the real father this time. But why is that "more than impossible?" What did I miss?

And poor Skinner. Last time we saw him, he was losing his teeth. Now he's all squashed up under his own car, like the Wicked Witch of the East. But he may have just been stunned. His death has not been confirmed, and his chances seem better than CSM's. William, on the other hand, is definitely still alive, despite the hole in his head.

So the final tally is: Scully and Mulder alive and pregnant, Skinner questionable, CSM plugged full of holes but not a confirmed kill, William alive but believed dead, Langley still virtual, alien interference still unresolved, and the X-Files closed again.

    An odd ending indeed.
