No salutes

But how much are their salaries? :)
FASA answered that decades ago:p

FWIW, another of their books lists a black-market but brand-new TOS shuttlecraft at 700,000Cr (and 350,000 for a reconditioned one)

Good thing Burnham got her rank back. 750 bucks a month just ain't enough to have your cake and eat it too.

She gets free food, housing, clothing, and medical care, so 750 C is just luxury pay she was just accruing for when (if) she ever returned from the war.

The real question is whether the Discovery crew get back pay for the nine months they skipped travelling into the future.

Starfleet could very well be the "military" of the future. However, that does not mean it would be anything like what we consider our military to be today.

This could be the answer to the question in that "is Starfleet military or not" thread.

One thing that is indisputable is that Starfleet is an armed force, specifically an armed naval force (in space), that fights full-scale Federation wars. It is a formal uniformed service with command structure, its own service academy, tactical and advanced tactical training, security force and court-martial.

As with one or two RW examples, Starfleet is "not a military" because of a combination of 'the party line' and 'primary mission objectives' (A RW example of former is the Japanese Self Defence Force, an example of the later would the US Coast Guard, which can be militarized, but is mainly a 'national security and rescue service' with military equipment).

Let's not start this[debate], because I am right, and you're wrong.

I suppose they would, which would be freaking awesome. It would get soooo heavily taxed, though.

And what about City on the Edge of Forever, Kirk and Spock were in the past for months (imho), yet according to Scott they were gone for only a moment.

Ed McMahon: "You are correct Sir."
Japanese Self Defence Force
Politically correct speech for "The Military."

I doubt it. Technically, they weren't present or doing their jobs during those nine months. So if anything, they got cheated out of nine months worth of paychecks. Granted, I doubt it hurt them that much, I'm sure travelling to another universe probably earns them a premium, to say nothing of the hazard pay for going into enemy territory. The medals they got afterwards probably come with a pay bonus, plus some of them got promotions. Financially speaking, everyone serving on Discovery is on Easy Street.

But what if someone agrees with you... PARADOX, you are correct but someone else who is wrong then agrees with you and is in fact right. ||| e N t E r - - - p A r a L L e L - - - universes... time folds... physical laws don't apply... fahrenheit and celcius are the same... metric and imperial units combine... |||

Counterpoint: that crew had 9 months worth of bills waiting for them when they got back. Just because Saru only spent a week in alt-universe doesn't mean the landlord of his apartment isn't out 9 months of rent that's now due.

I'd say they got paid for 9 months. TBH, it's just easier in a lot of ways to eat that than to pick a fight with a bunch of war heroes over less than a rounding error in that month's Starfleet payroll.
