Opinions on The Orville

I'm surprised it's as successful as it is given the tactics they've used.

It really seems as if they made a late decision to try to lock in a couple of million hard-core fans as subscribers by going all in on fanwank at the expense of everything else.

Posts like this really make me wonder if there's something wrong with me, because I didn't notice any of these issues while Disco. I'll admit, the first handful of episodes were a little rough, but even they didn't seem this bad to me.
Nope! Nothing wrong with you at all. Exactly the same for me as well. I quite enjoyed Discovery throughout, and it got stronger as it went on. I'm very much looking forward to the next season.

Actually, the same exact thing is true with The Orville as well!

*sigh* This may surprise some of you, but you in fact CAN like Orville or Discovery without going out of your way to bring up how much you hate the other and condescend all who disagree with you.

This was cute at first, now it’s just gotten obnoxious.
This!

You have to wonder about the continued angst and anger over a TV show they don't like? They are, of course, free to not like it. But, I don't know, when I don't like a show, I don't continually harp on it. I move on.

I liked Discovery enough to not cancel CBS All Access while it was on. But IMHO it was still a show with myriad flaws - most of which seem to have been either conceptual and/or related to either a writers room without talent, or executive producers of questionable talent (e.g., Kurtzman) jumping in and crapping on their work.

Just because I state I didn't think all of the series worked doesn't mean I'm attempting to personally insult you. No more than you saying that you unquestionably liked it insults me.

Not sure if that's directed at me, but I'm certainly not insulted. I just find it psychologically fascinating when people hate watch and then regurgitate their opinions over and over. I'm not referring to you by any means.

To be clear, everyone has a right to their own opinions and the freedom to express it. But, like I was saying, I just move on when I truly don't like a show. Life is too short.

I tend to think Trek is a bit different, because many of us have been watching for decades. So, we're going to continue to talk about it because it is what we've always done.

Maybe take a break for the time being? If a habit isn't bringing enjoyment, it's time to break that habit! :)

Who is saying we aren't enjoying the talk about the show? This is the only place where Discovery is even brought up. It is the TrekBBS after all. :techman:

I'm enjoying talking about The Orville.

I think some STD fans don't enjoy seeing people who don't like it express their opinions. Hence faux solicitousness.

Nice deflection. I'm talking about hate watching just to regurgitate how much they hate it. That's not enjoyment! ;)

I'm not saying that applies to you either.

Most Discovery fans that I've seen, including myself, don't mind criticism aimed towards the show at all. In fact, I don't think it's the perfect show. Gasp! There would've been things I've done differently. But, overall, I like it! :techman:

And, I enjoy The Orville as well.

Just to be clear I don't have a problem with people not liking things I like, what I said before was completely honest.
I can understand just feeling like a show doesn't really fit your tastes, where I get confused is when people start talking about more objective things like how bad the writing, or acting is, and I noticed no problems with them.

Nonsense, you can't enjoy both!!!!!

I more struggle with the need to bash it constantly.

I really enjoyed The Orville, looking forward to the next season!

I have heard quite a number of Trek fans compare The Orville to TNG. I must disagree. To me, The Orville is a hybrid of TNG and TOS.

It has similar aesthetic to TNG, it has a similar feel, but like TOS, it has less science, less technobabble, and simpler stories. It has the same positive, hopeful feeling as both shows and gives a nod to Gene's vision of the future. I'd like to see The Orville fix the humor part...it can be funny, but they have to get the tone right. I hope they give this show a number of seasons to get it just right.

I've watched a few episodes. I liked a couple of them, but not all of them. Some of the silliness bothers me and I don't like the whole situation with the captain's x-wife around. I like to watch (and read) sci-fi to escape reality for a few minutes, and I don't like a reminder of my own divorce and the headaches an x-wife can cause.

I think there is potential however. I remember I did not like TNG in the first season, but it ended up being outstanding in the final view.
