News Cruz: I’ll Be Back

At this point there's nothing left to observe other than that they've pulled stupider stuff out of their asses and filmed it.

Will STD suddenly have a fully interactive and autonomous hologram based in sickbay for medical emergencies?

It's good to know if I ever try any give the show another shot not to get too attached to any of the characters as most seem to die.

Glad he's coming back but I still wish he never left. He belonged on that crew. He belonged in that Sick Bay.
*Culber dies*
Production (since the day it happened): But our plan is to bring him back.
Star Trek Fans: Boo! He's a nondescript boring character who should be left dead! Boo!

He is nondescript and boring. He should remain dead. I'd rather see Lorca or Prime Georgiou brought back to life. At least they were memorable.

On a more serious note: I'm wondering if it's as Culber physically or in Stamets' mind?

THIS. It's really the perfect place for him. Ideally imo, only we and Stamets should ever see and/or hear him. And be totally ambiguous of whether he is really there or just being imagined by Stamets.

Living beings tend to die. Those in the military during wartime have a higher likelyhood of dying...shocking I know...

So ... if we kill him off, it's an offensive trope.

If we bring him back ... it's an offensive trope.

Hookay.

I don't care. I liked the character, I'll be glad to see him back and I'll be curious how they do that. I'm in.

There's no contradiction there (although 'resurrecting your gays' is hardly a trope - the 'magical queer' refers to a gay character who is worldly wise and excessively knowledgeable because of their tough tough life, analogous to the 'magical negro' trope of which Morgan Freeman's filmography is full). Both can be a bad idea. It was a dumb decision to kill him off, an even dumber one if that was never intended to be permanent.

Which is why they shouldn't have killed him off in the first place and avoid both offensive tropes.

But I'm with you man, I want him back more than the disappointment in the circumstances which he was taken away, and I'm super curious to how they do it.

Star Trek has created for us many tropes... I hope "Ressurrecting your gays" doesn't become one of them lol.

Yeah, that worked out ever so well with Number Six on nuBSG...

Culber, Mirror Lorca, Mirror Stamets, Prime Landry, the entire crew of the ISS Charon, and maybe even Voq are all just hanging out in Mushroom Purgatory, trying to avoid dark corridors. It's getting crowded.

^ Prime Landry? She's Ripper-bait. I think you mean MU Landry...

And MU Stamets was vaporized by phaser fire. No chance for him to be spore-resurrected...

I liked Culber and thought it was a mistake to kill him, especially considering how little impact it had on what came after. But I am very hesitant about resurrecting the dead, especially minor characters. I thought part of Discovery's mission statement was that actions now have long-term consequences, like in the real world, but I guess dying doesn't count.

TBH, after the first season, I have little faith these writers have anything new or interesting to say in the faith v. science debate. I hope that doesn't become the Klingon war of season two.

Almost every notable character who died in Season 1 came back in some way. Even the ones we never really met like Real Tyler and Prime Lorca. Is it Star Trek or Supernatural?
