When I was in the US Coast Guard, we sometimes called our ship the Sundew, and sometimes we called it Sundew. There's no one way to refer to ships.

Or from a different naval era. Use of “the” before a ship’s name was quite common for centuries.

I am active duty US Navy and we use both "the Enterprise" and "Enterprise" interchangably depending on the circumstance. I served aboard the USS Curts and we [the crew] referred to it as both "the Curts" and "Curts" without issue. Mind you we also called the ship "the Cursed" and "the Cuts" because it was old and run down and morale was really low but I digress. :P

I agree with those that have said that including "the" is simply a matter of whether it works in the sentence or not. You run into this issue where not including "the" can cause the line to sound...wrong. Either way, totally interchangable and neither is incorrect.

As I've said elsewhere, I think that kind of forced synchronicity is asinine and stupid no matter which show does it. Believe me, I don't think Discovery is any sillier about that kind of thing than other shows and I'm not calling them out any moreso than I have other shows.

Discovery has other problems that do not involve fan-wankery-as-an-insipid-attempt-at-cultivating-faux-nostalgia-in-order-to-rope-in-TOS-fans. Those problems have a far greater deleterious impact on the show than something as silly as this. Truly, having the Enterprise conveniently show up is the least of Discovery's issues. I was merely pointing out how unrealistic it seemed to me, even given the paradigm of magical thinking already established over the course of many shows and movies.

    YMMV.

Discovery's response to a distress call made far more sense than most of those "asinine" moments in the show.

Regardless, I'll take DISCO, warts, problems and all, as it is, and allow the story to unfold.
