are not the same.
They look the same to me?

Said it before and I'll say it again. Canon has nothing to do with consistency or continuity. Canon is an arbitrary function of copyright, determined by the rights holders at their whim. That's all. None of it matters. It's all make believe. :bolian:
I should also add that continuity is also arbitrary and determined by the rights holders. The only reason the Star Trek spinoffs are considered linked to each other and to TOS is because the rights holders said they are. Accepted canon, and by extension the different continuities, is defined by CBS now, and previously it was defined by NBC. Inconsistencies are irrelevant. Whoever owns the show defines what goes where. People can try to parse out issues between different series or episodes, and disagree with it. But ultimately if the question is "Is X connected to Y," the answer can't be found by dissecting stories or aesthetics or analyzing connections and deviations. The only answer that matters is the one from the copyright holder.

If you look at that conversation in toto, it's clear that what's amazing is the use of forcefields and transporter-like tech to give the holograms physical reality. That doesn't mean Riker hasn't seen a hologram before.
that was, you know, exactly my point

Everyone is stuck on "visual canon" what about audio canon? If it doesn't include the Courage soundtrack, is it canon? Shouldn't we please have Amok Time fight music playing when Burnham and AshVoq get it on? If I have faith of the heart, is my heart non-canon?

Yes it is. Whether CBS call their new one PRIME and insist over and over than everything is the same as it's always been is immaterial. In reality, they're different and incompatible, and thus are not the same.

By that logic, a unified Star Trek continuity doesn't exist, and that's just not true.

You can keep saying that Discovery doesn't take place in the same universe as the rest of televised Trek until you are blue in the face; that doesn't mean what you are saying is in any way true.

It doesn't. It's all make believe, a hodgepodge of shows and movies over 50 years and a variety of producers and writers with their own ideas about which direction Trek should go in.

I define "true" by common sense and what I see on TV - which is a reboot/prequel akin to Gotham. CBS defines it by what they're determined will keep them the most subscribers which is "prime universe".

It's their product. They can do what they like with it. If they wanted to call Turkish Star Trek canon, they could.

Question: Is it possible for the characters and events depicted in Discovery to be consistent with characters and events depicted in the rest of Prime Universe Star Trek?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Does it LOOK exactly the same the Star Trek Prime universe in 2255 has been previously depicted? ...And Does it Need to?

Answer: No and No.

It is canon. Why? Because CBS says it is, they control Star Trek, and Discovery is set in the prime timeline and "prime universe"..otherwise why would they be holding themselves to canon as set down by TOS?

Which is the truth?. What they say it is or what we think makes rational sense? Cause they control cannon, we just control, well..... we control squat
Donald Trump claims his inauguration was the most well attended in history. Our eyes tell us otherwise. Donald Trump is the most powerful man in the world, so does that make him right regardless?
