Spoilers Discovery and the Novelverse - TV show discussion thread

Given that closing shot, and given the generally fanciful visual effects this season, I think it's best not to take changes in visual detail too literally. This show is simply interpreting the look of certain things differently than previous shows did.

A couple of continuity details did strike me:
Georgiou mentions subjugating the Betazoids during her tenure. This is consistent with The Sorrows of Empire, which established that the Betazoids had been all but exterminated sometime prior to "Mirror, Mirror."

The opening shot of Earth showed that Earth Spacedock was under construction in 2257. I don't recall if any of the novels have specified when it was built. Anyway, we can confirm that it's different from the "Starbase 1" that was under Klingon occupation last week, although some tie-ins have used that name for Spacedock (which never really made sense to me, since a starbase is a support facility for deep-space operations, the equivalent of a frontier fort, while Earth Spacedock is more like an airport/hotel/mall complex in a major city).
Yeah, I caught that too, re: Spacedock, and it seems to line up with offscreen sources, since the only thing I can even think of right off the top of my head concerning its construction history was in the FASA RPG, but other sources like Enterprise: The First Adventure and The Greater Good (from Mirror Universe: Shards and Shadows) have Earth Spacedock in service in both universes at least as far back as 2264.

Funny thing...I'm actually having esophagus-widening surgery on Tuesday (the day after tomorrow), which made me chuckle/shudder slightly at Tilly's line to Orion Clint Howard™ in tonight's episode.

We have another variant on Orion makeup now, by the way, since these Orions were a duller, less saturated green than those in TOS and ENT -- a bit like Devna's coloring in "The Time Trap," only darker -- and the men weren't hyper-muscular, bald, and covered in body piercings like they were in ENT.

On the other hand, we saw a Trill tattoo-parlor customer whose makeup design looked pretty much exactly like the standard Trill makeup.

I had a rare color-blindness issue with that, since they were just too damn pale. I was watching with my friends, and one asked what kind of alien the first Orion we saw was, and I said, "Human, I guess?" and then he pointed out she was green, and I had to point out that, in the past, Orions were generally forest green or avocado green. In later scenes where they were next to the fairer-skinned humans in the same light, I could pick up on it more, but it was still a little subtle for me.

I'm curious about a very specific connection this episode may have with Desperate Hours.

It looks like we get some shots of people dressed in The Cage era uniforms while Michael is giving her speech. Kind of hard to tell because it was blurry, but you can sort of seem them in the front when Michael turns to face the crowd. I am curious if they are going to "canonize" the explanation David Mack gave in Desperate Hours.

Devna is in TOS? I just thought she was a novel character.

I don't see why not. The JJVerse used the TOS uniforms. I don't see why they wouldn't. they need to go over to that uniform eventually. The STD one isn't great.

Any screencaps of this? I missed it. Also if there is one of Earth and spacedock I'd enjoy that too.

Another possibility is Kriosian, especially considering Krios Prime could have been conquered by the Klingon Empire by that point.

^ Possibly, but given that the Trill makeup design is far more casually known to most folks, I'm betting that the producers intended for that woman to have been a Trill in that scene.

It was definitely a Trill, not a Kriosian. Kriosians only have spots on their temples, not running down the neck and torso like Trills do.

There are closer shots, but they're deliberately blurred.
It's odd, because I was sure it was intended to be the chamber from 2009 Star Trek where Kirk and Spock first met and Kirk got his medal at the end (In reality, the Long Beach city hall was used for the '09 movie), but that was in San Francisco (the Golden Gate bridge is visible from the balcony above) and this is in Paris, with the Eiffel Tower visible in the background.

I have been wondering if they actually used makeup on the Orion actors or digitally changed their skin color? It's so subtle on Clint Howard it's hard to see makeup layered on his own skin.
