And that's on Tony Clark's shoulders, not Boras.

I think it is a bit on Boras (and other big player agents) shoulders, as his demands have kept lower rung players from being able to get deals while he tries to squeeze more years out of teams that simply aren't willing to offer them.

Lower-rung players were hamstrung the moment Michael Weiner accepted the QO system in the then-current CBA, as it was essentially a form of restricted free agency. The MLBPA under Weiner was essentially run by veterans making $TEXAS, and that led to said veterans basically selling out the future generation, and the mid- and low-tier players, in exchange for their own benefits.

The other thing that kills the sympathy angle is a guy like JD Martinez who could sign a 5/125 deal right now but no, he wants more and what's preventing him from getting more is Boston's inflexibility

It definitely hurts the sympathy angle when there's a deal out there, especially one that's in line with what projections were saying before FA started. Yeah, not what Boras told him he could get, but it's a solid offer and lines up with his actual production.

Either way, i don't expect it to change unless he comes off of his demand or someone else gets into the bidding. D-Backs are rumored to be toying with it, but dunno how serious. Haven't been rumored to be anywhere near the alleged Boston (5/125-ish) offer thus far, and they'd have to go higher than their current max budget to try it. He's a bit of a luxury item for Boston, so not much desperation there, can't see them coming off of their number unless there's actual bidding, and even then, not sure how much higher before they hit their own walk away number.

Similar problem with Arietta, i guess. Theo is rumored to have called him before signing Darvish, basically asking him if he'd sign for what Darvish was about to sign for. (not a formal offer, but checking in one more time). he said no, couldn't do it for that, so Cubs went ahead with Darvish. This isn't all collusion by some evil cabal of owners, players are in on this problem themselves. Going to be a lot of players in the Unemployment Spring Training facility next week...

The question is, how long will they remain unemployed? It will be very interesting to see who blinks first

Some of these players better sign soon or else teams will move on to other players. I can see Boston dropping its pursuit of Martinez in a week or so and going after Logan Morrison. Who is cheaper, yet brings much the same skill set.

I realize most fans come hoping to see a well played game, but Marlins fans should be over that notion by now and would like a little fun at least.

    Jeter must be the anti-Veeck.

They better be lowering ticket prices in Miami or the damned stadium will be empty.

Yeah, the leaks of offers out there is hurting the narrative. Hosmer, for example, is still rumored to have two 7-year offers, not sure about the money involved but sure it's not peanuts. Players can hold out, but when there are reasonable looking deals out there, it's a bad look. Is Hosmer an 8-10 year, 30M/year player? jesus, no.

It's a real bad look, if those rumored two 7-year offers are real. Good god, what does he want? :guffaw:

Nine years and a higher average annual value. Hosmer isn't even as good as JD Martinez.

If "collusion" can be defined as 30 teams collectively rediscovering their common sense, sure.

I don't even think it is that, honestly. Home runs are continuing to be devalued, as are aging arms. There's a lot of both on the market right now, and not a lot of teams that are in that dire of need for either.

    Essentially there's a bottleneck.

Then there's the possibility the cable bubble could burst in the next few years, which likely has some teams leery of passing out mega-deals.

It's not a possibility, it's actively happening. The Astros' RSN went bankrupt, and the Dodgers' RSN literally doesn't reach something like 55 percent of their market (and the Dodgers are taking on hundreds of millions of dollars in debt every year because their RSN isn't getting carriage; that debt issue has already generated attention from the MLB central office). That's why I find it hilarious that the Cubs are still aiming to start their own network in 2020; the money literally won't be there.

There is only one race, the human race. I don't see how a group being honored by a sports franchise can be considered racist.

So Timby, what in the shit hole of a CBA is causing owners to smarten up and not give stupid contracts to 30+ year olds?

My guess is the "salary cap" is doing this. Teams are making a concerted effort to stay below 197.
