Yeah, closers that blow games in big spots are the worst, amirite?

Imagine someone getting into the HOF after blowing a save in a crucial game 4 of a playoff series. Especially up 3 games to 0, having just beat the opponent 19-8 the night before. Someone like that shouldn't get a sniff of the HOF, right? ;)

Buy up all the racist memorabilia they've already manufactured while you can, people. After all, they wouldn't want to lose money over this.

Chief Wahoo isn't going away completely. Merch with him on it will continue to be sold in Northern Ohio. They apparently want to retain the trademark.
    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/29/sports/baseball/cleveland-indians-chief-wahoo-logo.html

    From the article
Although the Indians will stop using the logo on their uniforms, they will not relinquish the trademark and still will be able to profit off sales of merchandise bearing the logo at the stadium and in the Cleveland area. But by maintaining the trademark, the team, with the supervision of M.L.B., retains control of the proliferation of the logo. If it relinquished the trademark, or announced an intention never to claim its protections, another party could legally assume control of it and use the logo in other ways.

Brandon Moss heading back to the A's. Maybe he can rekindle some of the '14 magic...

Today, he was quoted as saying he isn’t sure what his role is going to be. I’m curious to see how they’ll use him.

Pitchers and catchers begin reporting in 11 days.

56 free agents have signed contracts since November 7, 2017. There are still ~145 free agents left to be signed.

To be honest, I wish they had kept Healy and moved Davis. I’m fine with Moss platooning, but I’d also like to see the youngsters (Pinder, Fowler, Moss, etc.) continue to develop.

Moss will be 35 at the end of the season, I think he stopped qualifying as a "youngster" a while ago.

Amazing. I wonder how many of those are still unsigned on opening day

Is it collusion if all 30 teams decide at the same time to stop signing older players to ridiculous contracts? Obviously Borass thinks so, but that guy only thinks of his own bank account so whatever.

I actually wouldn't mind if the Cubs signed Arrieta for good money, but only for 2 or 3 years. He's on the decline, but could manage a couple more good years.

It's not clear-cut, but it's highly suspect that everyone suddenly got smart last November, when you still have morons like Dan Duquette running teams. For example, it's not a particularly good look that that the Cubs had no problem whatsoever giving Lester his 6 / 155 going into his age 31 season, but now apparently feel that $25MM AAV is too much for a 30+ pitcher.

    Put another way:

I thought they were willing to go 5/125 for Darvish a while back? At least that is what the rumors have. Arrieta? I'm not sure I think anyone wants to sign him on for that many years considering his decline over the past couple of years.

The luxury tax is suppressing things to a degree, as is the loss of draft picks and international signing money. Then we have many front offices devaluing the home run, the Marlins dumping some huge pieces and some huge names on next years free agent docket. It really does feel like the perfect storm where older players are concerned this year.

The players were essentially dumb to sign off on all the pieces that restrain the growth of salaries without getting a mandatory floor for a percentage of revenues.
