MLB 17-18 Offseason: The Giants are preparing for EYBS' return

Fuck that noise. Stuart Sternberg's net worth is nearing a billion dollars; if he wants a new stadium so goddamn badly, he can do what someone does if they want to build a house: Go to the bank and ask for a loan.
I'm with you here. I don't know why city/local governments cave to these guys and use taxpayer $$$ to build new arenas.

The other thing that kills the sympathy angle is a guy like JD Martinez who could sign a 5/125 deal right now but no, he wants more and what's preventing him from getting more is Boston's inflexibility

That's insane $$$$ for someone that can't field and has only had 2 good years under his belt.

Sounds like the offer is more likely around 100 mill.... still way too much IMO.

Sure, it may smack of extortion for teams to essentially say "Build us a new arena, or we walk". But in many cases, it WORKS.

(Worked here in Omaha...the College World Series made us replace Rosenblatt Stadium or they'd bolt. We couldn't afford to lose the CWS, so we really had no choice.)

As for Chief Wahoo: I honestly don't see how anyone can look at that logo and NOT think it's racist. It's as obviously racist as TNG's "Code of Honor", or the Redskins' name, or the Braves' tomahawk chop.

Look up the direct spending impact of publicly funded facilities for private organizations: The ROI literally isn't there, and dozens of economists have torn apart the idea over the past decade and a half or so.

Don't get me wrong, I started my marketing career in the travel and tourism world, so I understand the value of tourism--every tourist essentially being a temporary taxpayer--but the return is in no way reflective of the cost. TD Ameritrade cost, what, like $130 million? I'd bet money that Omaha only has seen a small fraction of that in the seven or eight years since it opened.

I think it's twisted the wrong way.

Yeah, but you're a racist (I remember you pissing and moaning about people mourning the death of Nelson Mandela a few years ago, to say nothing of dogwhistles you dropped on guys like Robinson Cano), so of course you wouldn't see it as a caricature.

What? Go fuck yourself.

If you weren't an administrator you'd be suspended for comments like that.

Who do you think you are anyway?

Weird. He got his extra year, but for less money than I thought he’d get for a 7 year deal. Threw in an extra year for free...

$18 million per year, and I think the Padres will still end up regretting this deal before it is over.

As I saw on Twitter, the difference in total WAR between Hosmer and Dickerson since 2014 is like 0.4 WAR; one got $144 million, the other got DFA'ed.

What? Go fuck yourself.

The retort of someone who can't think of anything better to say.

Pro tip: Don't say things like a racist caricature is being twisted the wrong way, or about how a black player didn't have the "brains" to be a Yankee, or complain about "those guys" when Chapman's assault came up, or whine about "being forced to mourn the death of Nelson Mandela" (the last of which took you from beyond dogwhistles to just showing it on your sleeve). Say shit, you get called on shit. And hey, guys like Scout and BillJ rightfully took me to task for my shit about collusion this offseason--I still believe it happened, but now believe more that owners agreed to wait until pitchers and catchers reporting before doing more big-ticket signings in the hope of driving prices down, rather than the "holy shit, no one is going to get any money whatsoever" that I was feeling this winter--and, hey, I can own up to that.

But, seriously, say that Chief Wahoo--which is a character just as terrible as blackface--is being "twisted wrong," yeah, you're going to get called on it. There's no place for that in a civilized society, nor especially in a sport that's working like mad to increase its international appeal.

The Hosmer offer reportedly goes back to early-December. They sat on it for a couple of months hoping something better would come along.

Boston seems to have reached an agreement with J.D. Martinez on a 5 year contract.

Martinez can opt out after 2 years.

Story

No mention of $$$ yet.

5/110, with opt out after year 2 and 3. Looks like 25, 25, 22, 20, 18 is the structure

Not quite 7/210. Basically 2/50 if he’s any good. 5/110 is a steal, happy with what the Sox got on this one.

IDK, an 8 year deal for a 28 year old, with an opt out after 5 years. I've seen a lot more terrible deals.

Depends on who controls the opt-out? If it is Hosmer, I imagine he will collect every cent from all eight years of the contract.
