Stewart alludes to a longer recording at Paramount, but this is a funny little teaser for those of us who like to mock the "French" Yorkshireman. He also comments on his accent and vocab choices in general -- like using American English pronunciations for words like lieutenant.

In Season One, Sir Patrick Stewart actually does get to speak French -- briefly -- on a couple of occasions. The lion's share of his French banter was, of course, in "11001001" and he handled it quite well, actually. But I do have to admit, hearing "Space ... the Final Frontier ..." with a pseudo-French accent might've killed TNG before it could even get out of the gate. But if anyone could've pulled it off in the STAR TREK franchise ... Sir Patrick Stewart's the only one who would've been up to the challenge ...

Stereotypical reply:

Had Picard been speaking with a French accent he would have also been waving a white flag to everyone they meet.

I always wondered if the producers were really conscious of the fact that their French Captain surrenders in the pilot episode, and then is about to do it again just a few episodes later in "The Last Outpost", only to have the Ferengi surrender to him first.

Hell no. Please NO. Not Gérard Depardieu ! I'd rather have Jean Reno as Picard than Depardieu !

@2takesfrakes : believe me, Depardieu is such a bad actor...He doesn't know how to convey emotions
Jean Reno is much better, even if he'd have been too young for the role. Jean Rochefort, and even Jean Marais, could have made an amazing Picard !

I do not care for Jean Marais, in particular, and would not have wanted to see him cast as The Good Captain. Jean Rochefort I'm not overly familiar with, but Salut l'artiste also stars Marcello Mastroianni, whom I hold in high esteem. In a different reality, he could've made an excellent Picard ...

@2takesfrakes : oh, is there a particular reason you don't care about Jean Marais ? He was a very good classic actor. Mostly the same generation as the excellent Jean Gabin and the Tontons Flingueurs cast. Loads of wonderful actors...I miss them.
