Jodie Whittaker's accent

If I have trouble understanding an accent in a British TV show, I just turn on the closed captioning. Better to light a candle than curse the darkness.

How hard is it to make out the words "Oh, brilliant?" Could it be that many Americans aren't accustomed to hearing that word used to mean "great" or "wonderful," so they don't recognize it when they hear it?

British accents sometimes are hard to understand. As much as I love "The Office" which I am currently rewatching right now on Netflix, I still sometimes can't understand what they are saying. Makes me think of that scene in the third "Austin Powers" movie were Austin Powers and his dad switch to a English accent so the ladies in the room can't understand what they are saying. Of course with me I also have the added problems of hearing things clearly for reasons i'm not sure of. I think I need to get my ears checked but I also wonder if it's my tv setup since I don't have HD speakers.

When it sounds like "Aw, brey-yawn," then, yes, it's hard. On the other hand, I recognized it just fine when Tennant said "But that's brilliant" of Donna in "Journey's End." Maybe we're not half as stupid as you think we are.

What @Jayson1 meant to say was "when they switched to British slang" so the laides couldn't understand. At which point a lot of people needed an English-English dictionary.

I still hear "Oh Berlin" from Jodie, so it'll take some getting used to. But since she's the first Doctor I get to fancy, I'll get over it.
