In fairness he did eventually get his big win, with Voyager.Yeah, a Barclay that's actually a competent Engineer...scary!![]()
Yes and? That's the part of the ship's mission that was relevant to the current situation. If they were delivering medical supplies or stopping a Klingon raid on a Federation colony that's the part Kirk would have referred to. No sure why this is so difficult to understand. The ship wears many hats.I was just watching the vault blu ray and they showed a clip of Kirk from The Corbomite Maneuver: "What's the mission of this vessel, Doctor? To seek out and contact alien life. And an opportunity to demonstrate what our high-sounding words mean. Any questions?"

When you put it that way, it makes me wonder if the story is true. Maybe the emperor is manipulating Burnham with a lie.Lorca is a sexual predator who preyed on his adopted “daughter”. Betrayed PU Burnham and trapped her entire ship and crew in the MU to start with.
Why wouldn’t she side with the Emperor?

Barclay is extremely competent. He's just an awkward procrastinator.... who sometimes gets too much involved with his fantasies ...and is scared of spiders... And transporters...sometimes..Yeah, a Barclay that's actually a competent Engineer...scary!![]()
Why? Because for all she knows this Burnham and her MU Lorca planned something together (Remember Burnham had successfully been masquerading as her MU counterpart.) The Emperor is also fully aware of what someone from the PU Federation is like (and she sees anyone from the PU as dangerous); so yeah, anything she can do to create doubt in Burnham regarding MU Lorca may foil whatever MU Lorca has planned. Why would she lie? At that moment she knows Burnham is not her Burnham and believes that Lorca is not her Lorca. She gains nothing by lying to Burnham about MU Lorca because as far as either of them are concerned he’s dead. So the Emperor is turning Burnham against a dead man...
Yeah that makes such perfect sense.
This is my biggest remaining concern about Discovery, actually. That they will ruin all their setup by feeling they have to "explain" why the characters are interesting, flawed, human beings by having them be from some parallel world. That would be a big disappointment for me. I love the fact Star Trek has actual people in it again, and if that is undone for the sake of some intense fanwank, it will be hard to continue.

Waitasec.I just thought of something:
If Lorca got all his info from the Defiant logs, which is likely(he would know about the Buran, Burnham, Prime Landry, etc-to assemble his team). Then, he would also know how the war ends, and that the Federalies aren't conquered, and all his speeches about "and we MUST win the war" was just more of his slick talking. As he basically has a crystal ball of heavily detailed info about the next 10 years.
Waitasec.
If he had future knowledge, then went and used that knowledge to his advantage, did he not perhaps alter events, thus making Discovery a new timeline from the point at which he crossed over?
Perhaps he wasn't supposed to assemble his Discovery crew, and their lives would have all been different.
