obviously more than what we have seen so far. YMMDHow much of the show that you are supposed to be a prequel to can you cut away before it really is no longer a prequel?

Star Trek is about a the crew of a spaceship and using a SF setting to comment on modern society. It's not about a specific style of costume, ship design or bit of minutia. When it comes to the original series, so much is being ignored that it is a stealth reboot. When I was reading Desperate Hours, trying to have it both ways made the story pretty much unreadable.
You seem pretty hung up on it, so if you don't get it I can't help you.I just don't get the Prime universe hangup honestly? You have to ditch so much from TOS that you are basically doing a reboot and lying to your fans to keep them from setting the internet on fire.![]()
There's affection and there's obsession. Fans overly concerned about uniforms and ship are in the latter category. There would be no Discovery if fans weren't hung up on the past to begin with. That's why we end up with prequels and sequels to begin with. Name recognition brings in those who have an affection for prior material.
Desperate Hours is tie-in fiction and from sound of it suffers from fanboy thinking. I probably will read it based on that. I hate that stuff.

That sounds fantastic. Really need to pick it up.Star Trek is about a the crew of a spaceship and using a SF setting to comment on modern society. It's not about a specific style of costume, ship design or bit of minutia.

Depends on how they approach it. The dates and characterization are more important, IMO. Though dates can and should be mutable (I'm looking at you Eugenics Wars) Character trait evolved as the show and actor's performance does. For example I believe Spock never grinned or shouted "The Women!!!!" in The Cage because that runs counter to what Spock developed into. (But I will still joke about it).But people hung up on dates and character traits aren't?

See, I love uniform descriptions. One of my favorite details to obsess over. So, right up my alleyI like Mack's writing style, but he is bad for this kinda stuff. I had to put down books because he just had to explain what uniform each female character had at all moments. And how it looked on them and how men liked it and how many times they had to pull it down and why they wore pants, even though regs did not allow it if they wore pants.
It was just too setting breaking for me.
You must be referring to the famous incident back in the 2000's, where an angry mob of fans lobbied, bullied, and stalked the producers of Star Trek demanding they make an episode explaining how Klingons changed in appearance, and the producers were so terrified, they caved in and immediately wrote out a two part story to silence the riot. That was a joke for the fans, but fans could not laugh and take the joke.
As I've said before, you take what works and build on that.I tend to think it is all important if one is doing a prequel. It doesn't mean it has to be an exact recreation, but should attempt to maintain the spirit of what came before.

I don't think anyone here is clamoring for a perfect 1:1 recreation of TOS visuals ala Star Trek Continues or a fan film. I know i'm not. I think what some fans want is something more consistent and visually faithful with the era. I think BillJ said it best right here.
I find the spirit is there. It doesn't mean it has to be an exact recreation, but should attempt to maintain the spirit of what came before.
I do as well to a certain degree. Discovery has gotten a lot right that is consistent with a Pre-TOS era. The props are faithful, When Lorca shows Burnham the spore drive and takes her to some TOS era locations. I thought those were faithful and really good. It's gotten a lot right.I find the spirit is there.
I do hope we see the classic Gold, Blue and Red uniforms eventually. If they were like the ST09 and STID uniforms I'd be pretty happy with that.
They were used in the Cage which predates Discovery by two years. That could be 9 years or so, they were not used in this era.
