Spoilers Supergirl - Season 3

I wonder to what extent the writers' choice of what popular music had survived to the 31st century was shaped by what music clearances they were able to get.

I imagine it might be a combination of what music the producers felt would be stylistically appropriate for the final scene scene and what they could afford.

I saw this from episode writer Derek Simon on Twitter last night

"One of my favorite moments from my wedding was singing along to Livin' On A Prayer. In fact, I loved that moment so much I referenced it in my impassioned letter asking for permission to use Livin' On A Prayer in this #Supergirl episode. And @BonJovi said yes! I love Bon Jovi."

I am not a huge Jon Bon Jovi fan but I am aware that he has had a tatoo of the Superman symbol for many years. I imagine that played a factor in him approving this.

If there are other Worldkillers, what makes Reign so special that she was chosen to terrorize National City?

Wasn't that the prophecy? That she comes first, that she's the harbinger? As Alura's hologram explained, the ancient society behind the Worldkillers was matriarchal. Makes sense that the lead Worldkiller would be female, then.

Ah, okay. So they got lucky and got clearance to use the song they wanted. Sometimes, though, I'm sure compromises have to be made.

And I hope the clearance they got includes reruns and home video as well. They couldn't very well replace the song with a more generic one, since Bon Jovi is specifically referenced in dialogue. (And maybe this specific song? Was that the one Imra was talking about to Mon-El?)

Yes, that is the specific song they are talking about. It shows I am only a casual Bon Jovi fan at most. Irma talking about a "Tommy and Gina" seemed familiar but I could not place it until later in the episode. I always remember a character in the lyrics called Tommy, Tom being my real first name, but I forgot the girl's name in the song is Gina.

Yeah, me too. I would have thought failure to clear such rights was a thing of the past, but I was unpleasantly surprised when the recent Constantine TV series blu-ray had to replace some music, so I guess it's potentially still a thing.

Usually I can't tell one pop song from another, but since it was mentioned in dialogue, it would be awkward to replace it.

Dare I admit that part of me was disappointed that Streaky wasn't orange and didn't have a little red cape?

Maybe it's not too late for Kara to get a new cat, "Streaky II," who accidentally gets exposed to some weird Kryptonian radiation for an episode . . .?

Didn't have a problem with the Bon Jovi song. Liking Bon Jovi seems totally in character for Mon-El.

He should at least have had his namesake streak of color somewhere instead of being solid black.

Speaking of black vs. colors, after seeing the Legion's costumes, I really hope Winn works with them to come up with something brighter before they go back to the 31st century. I know they described their era as a pretty dark, anarchic time, but that's all the more reason to be bright and inspiring like Supergirl. She is supposed to be their role model, after all.

Colorful costumes really wouldn't make sense for this incarnation of the Legion, especially not on the particular mission that brought them back to the past in the first place, which clearly required a lot of stealth.

Better than average episode for this show, but again the "where's Superman" problem exists. This is a huge threat, and would absolutely get his attention. They even MENTIONED him, so it just doesn't make sense that no one said, "hey, should we call Clark?"

I hope Brainiac 5 is using this opportunity to create a database of Earth history and culture. They claim virtually everything was wiped out in a few centuries, and this would be a good way to re-establish continuity with the past (assuming they consider that a worthy goal).

That IS a great idea.

the particular mission that brought them back to the past in the first place
Am I misinterpreting you, or does this and one of your earlier posts suggest the Legion traveled to the past deliberately? Because dialogue in "Reign" established explicitly that wasn't the case. In fact, I don't think there's been anything to indicate that this version of the Legion is capable of (non-accidental) time travel.

Getting stuck as far back in the past as they did wasn't intentional; initially traveling back into the past was.

Like The Realist, I just rewatched the scene in "Reign," and you're dead wrong here. Mon-El and Imra explained that they were knocked into a wormhole into the past during their fight with "the Darkness." And they explained this week that they were on the way back to their home base with key information encoded in their DNA. Getting trapped in the past interfered with their mission.

(By the way, it was a mistake to rewatch that scene standing up. Amy Jackson's voice is so silky-sultry that it makes my knees stop working.)

It looked like Saturn Girl, sorry Imra, was firing all those weights at Reign, unless Cosmic Boy was hiding in the background. No mention of her actual power at all so far unless I missed it. That could be awkward, given the kinds of thoughts Kara most likely had finding her married to Mon-El. I've gotta say that as a diehard fan of the Silver Age Legion, I was somewhat disappointed.
