"This is so fucking cool"

Attitudes to certain swear words changed, has anyone seen the film "The King's Speech" which has about a 40 second long scene of swearing. It got a 12 certificate in the UK in the US I believe it an R certifcate. WOuld the certifcate have chan ged if it was released 5 years early, what about 10 years earlier?

It honestly didn’t bother me, but it did come off as forced. Almost like, “hey we can use the F-word. Where should we put it?”

I think stuff like that will be more organic in the future.
I thought that was a great scene.

Honestly though, when Tilly blurted out "This is so fucking cool!", and then apologized to Stamets, only to have Stamets say about her apology "No, cadet...it IS fucking cool" was one of the more fun pieces of dialogue in the series, and it served to underscore traits of two of the characters...

It underscored Tilly's unabashed exuberance (her lack of a filter when she gets really excited about something), and it made Stamets quite a bit more relatable as a person because he, for a moment, shared in Tilly's unchecked exuberance, even though she was just a cadet and he an officer.

The swearing was needed to accentuate that "unchecked exuberance". If she would have just said "This is so damn cool", it would not have illustrated Tilly's lack of a filter as well as it did.

Profanity has pretty much always existed in English and other languages. Chaucer is rife with it, for example. Profanity, the concept of "forbidden" or profane words, expletives of varying degrees of social unacceptability, etc, are arguably an inherent part of language itself. I would find it incredibly unrealistic for people 200 years from now not to have some set of terms that are considered profane or socially taboo. Whether they're the same words we consider profane today is a different question. What is considered profane or offensive today isn't necessarily considered so tomorrow.

Realistically, the vernacular of the twenty-third century is likely to be very different than today, but STAR TREK has always fudged this in order to be accessible to contemporary TV audiences. Kirk and crew always spoke colloquial English, limited only by the Standards and Practices of time, which no longer apply. So, yeah, Tilly is going to say "fucking cool" like an ordinary person, instead of some weird invented future slang.

I thought humanity had grown beyond swearwords in the 23rd century

Apart from the D-word that Kirk and Picard used... Kirk may have said the H-word once as well.

Modern TV shows do seem to believe that it's more "mature" to show profanity. I'll agree that having people say profanity on TV is just showing profanity, it's not like television for decades didn't need to swear every other word to induce a sense of fear or threat or anything.

Maybe the overuse of profanity will end up desensitizing people and/or show a cheap cop-out in trying to induce a sense of fear or threat.

I wonder who made the list of no-no words and what level of severity they imply by default. The D-word, uttered just right, can be just as unnerving as the F-word yet the D-word has been socially acceptable for decades and not lose its perceived importance.

Here is question, do we still use the same swear words today as they did in the 18th century? I suspect not so because we consider something a swear word today doesn't mean it'll be considered one in 200 years time.
"Fuck" is documented at least as far back as 1475, though it could be far older (so nearly 600 years). "Shit" goes back to Old English (so roughly 1500 or so years).

What is hilarious is that in these very forums certain words or phrases that are allowed in the general public are verboten here. ;)

F-bombs are OK, but don't dare use a word or phrase that offends the political Left. Those are the new "swear words".

There will always be words considered "profane". They will just change based upon who is controlling the narrative.

Saying "Fuck" is OK because it doesn't hurt anyone. When you drop the F-bomb you have no marginalized groups in mind.

When you use racial slurs, however, you're just reinforcing stereotypes. When you live on an unequal society like ours, where White people still are the most privileged ethnicity around, being a stereotyped PoC physically hurts you. A person who is boiled down to a stereotype will certainly have less job opportunities, will be treated unfairly by the law enforcement, etc.

The same goes for the usage of any other types of bigoted slurs, like the sexist ones. Words can hurt. If you doubt it, go to a movie theater and scream "Fire!" to see what happens. ;)

The profane is controlled by the establishment. There's no Left-wing establishment anywhere in the planet. The strong majority of worldwide governments are still controlled by the Right. The idea that there's a "Global Leftist Government" and that Right-wingers are "oppressed rebels" is just a conspiracy theory.

LOL, I am not talking about "racial slurs".

The Left is really stuck on its' "anyone who disagrees with me must be a racist!" meme.

I am referring to mainstream phrases such as an acronym used to identify a subset of leftwing activists and so on.

And be sure to tell Milo Yianopolis that there is no "left wing establishment". The people beaten to a pulp with baseball bats who wanted to hear this gay libertarian speak at Berkley while the police were told to stand down and let it happen will really be interested as well.

Well, mileage may vary on that kind of thing I suppose. I would have liked the show to illustrate that Tilly doesn’t use foul language, then when she’s forced to play MU Tilly she’s told that Killy cusses like a sailor and that’s the point at which we get our first f-bomb. Would have had a bit of the shock factor and some humor that way. But like I said, it didn’t bother or offend me. Just didn’t quite flow for some reason.

What any of this has to do with swear words ?

If you are talking about that dude from the Thirteenth Doctor thread, the Mods stepped in after he started giving strange rants about "SJWs" in places that had nothing to do with the matter. It wasn't because he merely mentioned the acronym "SJW". It was because he was being annoying.

Swear words and slurs can get you in trouble when you casually drop them. This is definitely not the case. You omitted the context.

I just pointed out that there are "profane" words right here in this forum.

Some of the same people who celebrate hearing the F-bomb demand that acronyms such as you referenced be banned and people who use them be punished.

And it wasn't just because that particular poster was annoying (he annoyed me too, I called him out for his hateful statements) because other people in different contexts have been punished for using the same aforementioned acronym.

Some animals are more equal than others, as the saying goes.
