Spoilers Dr. Hugh Culber Despite Yourself Spoilers!

Despite Yourself ****SPOILERS****

I was just starting to like Dr. Culber, n they go n kill him off. How do you guys imagine they’ll bring him back? Time travel? Mirror universe Culber?

I personally think the latter would be ‘the easy way’ but it won’t be the same Culber, he’d be evil.

It’s already been confirmed (I think it was on after trek) that they’re not doing a mirror version of the character.

I don't think they'll bring him back. Well, guess we'll finally meet the CMO, anyway.

It does seem an odd thing to do after just 10 episodes, but I guess it makes everyone vulnerable and no one is guaranteed to last the length of the series.

I'm a little worried about the whole "bury your gays" backlash his death might recieve. For a show that revels in it's representation, that was very risky to kill him off. Maybe they do find a way to bring him back and this is unfounded. Wasn't there a situation in a show called the 100 which got massive backlash because of this particular storyline?

I totally understand surprise deaths being great for making dramatic TV, and it does make sense to have someone who is in a relationship/have an emotional connection with other characters to be the one who suffers to make a bigger impact (ie, family man Chief O'Brien), but it also adds to the bury your gays trope, just when I thought Trek had finally learnt from its mistakes and returned to its progressive roots.

They’ve already confirmed he isn’t gone for good

And now they're going to a) ruin the emotional impact his death had by making it not permanent? (he'd better just be coming back in flashbacks/hallucinations, etc) and b) ruin his return by telling us to expect him?

I'm guessing what happened is the writers/showrunners thought it was a great idea to kill Culber off, but by the time someone (probably the actors) told them it was a bad idea (due to the "bury your gays" trope) it was too late to modify the story. So they're going to awkwardly make him come back in the future.

I do think it had less impact because Tyler was the killer, from what I remember there wasn’t much interaction between Tyler n Culber in the previous episodes, other than the initial scan when Tyler first came on board.

Perhaps if Stamets was his killer it would’ve had more of an impact (we saw him lash out at Culber at the beginning of the episode)
