Estimates show that I wasn't wrong... $2 million win for Star Wars. That means the actuals COULD still have Jumanji in front.

One Billion dollars worldwide is already done. #1 domestically for 2017, over Beauty and the Beast. Still working on World Wide, where it is currently 3rd behind Beauty and the Beast and Fate of the Furious.

OH NOES! It's the end of the world!

Actually, according to BoxOfficeMojo, we're still seeing estimates for yesterday. Finals aren't in yet. Its possible they will end up differently. And even if Jumanji does beat out TLJ, eventually the film has to fall from #1. It is currently poised to be the 6th (perhaps the 5th or if it keeps the steam it has, 4th) highest grossing domestic film of all time and the top earner of 2017 domestically. If Disney looks poorly on that? Oh well.

    Disney to George Lucas:

"Hello, I'd like to return one Star Wars and have my $4 billion back."

5th fastest to $1 billion global, #1 movie in the US in 2017 despite only being out for 2 1/2 weeks of it, 2nd fastest to $450 and $500 million, #1 movie 3 weekends in a row, 2nd highest grossing Star Wars movie. Seriously, anyone who thinks either Disney looks unfavorably on the box office performance of this movie or thinks it under performed is a crazy person.

A financial disappointment. In this very forum, in fact. I really don't have time to go back and check, but probably in this very thread.

Getting silver in the olympics can still be a disappointment if you were expecting gold. I set my expectations lower than most (significantly lower in many cases) and while the opening weekend exceeded them on that particular data point it looks like the overall global take is going to fall short of even my intentionally pessimistic numbers. Probably not going to end in tears for anyone at Lucas or Disney, but it isn't going unnoticed either. That said, the 2nd in the franchise's trilogies has previously done the worst of each bunch and this year's holiday vacation season was a week later than usual, so who knows what Disney was actually expecting.

Right now it is the 6th highest grossing movie of all time, and has a good chance of making it as high as 3 before it's done. It has already beat Rogue One, making it 2nd only to The Force Awakens which made nearly a billion dollars in America alone which is nearly unheard of, the 2nd being $700 million. That was largely fueled by it being the first Star Wars movie in more than a decade, the first one post-George Lucas, and the one looking to "redeem" the series from the prequels. Did you honestly think The Last Jedi was going to equal or beat that? If you did, your expectations were FAR too high, especially considering there were people who did not like The Force Awakens, and this were not going to see The Last Jedi, let alone see it multiple times. The box office for The Force Awakens was a one in a generation perfect storm and was never going to be equaled.even if JJ had done ep 8.

I think it will land 4 or 5 myself as highest grossing. And personally, I didn't expect it to make higher than 7 or 8. I'm pleased with this. As you suggest, there was SO much hype for TFA, there was no way it wasn't going to do the box office figures it did AND any sequel would do less. And that's okay. Maybe TLJ's box office total is going to be a little disappointing for Disney, but it isn't going to stop their plans. People really need to realize that. You can be disappointed in the events of TLJ. I'm totally cool with that. But people need to respect that it is a box office hit.

It won't because it is a percentages game for them.
Exactly. We, as the audience, do not know what Disney is expecting, likely because all the percentages and work they have will only be known to them.

I mean, even when I was in retail and worked for a large chain, but certainly not the largest, the company took loses that seemed outlandish to me in turns of flood damage and didn't bother to report it to their insurance company and just wrote it off.

    Companies can do that.
