Alright folks, just a curious question I have. I have read a lot about the cast of Star Trek: TNG and I have come across several posts and articles which suggest that the two least popular characters, by fans of the show, are Ens. Wesley Crusher, and Dr. Katherine Pulaski. It is almost an even split between the two of them, from what I have read and found online. I am sure that the majority of people will probably agree with those assessments, however, I am curious if anyone else has any other characters that they would like to add. Please, tell me if you agree with the majority of people from the sites and posts that I have visited and read, and also, please let me know if you disagree. Who is your least favorite regular character on Star Trek, TNG, and why? Also, as a side measure, please let me know of your least favorite character from the entire series. Thanks in advance.

I'm not very impressed with Commander Riker, Data would make a better first officer.

Personally I have polar shifts for Wesley. Sometimes I like his development, but other times I find myself very annoyed with his.. well, existence. I particularly feel this way in earlier seasons, but from Season 3 or so onward I feel he contributes a decent bit to the show.

I guess I'd go with Wesley. Season 3 Wesley is okay but two seasons of annoyance before he got tolerable.

Frankly, Alexander just doesn't work. I'm not even sure what they were going for, but no one seems to understand him, because he's basically caught between cultures, that in all but 2 or 3 cases don't blend at all. Those cases are his parents, & a far removed character on a later series. The only person (His dad) in any position to help the kid go through that is uniquely qualified, for having gone through it himself, & yet somehow seems completely unwilling to do so. The entire storyline does worse than make Worf look like an absentee father. It makes him seem deliberately cruel, because how would anyone who saw that they were the only person experienced in what someone was having difficulty with, turn their back on them?

They tried to make that kid stick to anyone they could, & it just fell flat, because that character is the biggest mistake they ever made. It had zero growth, & only served to make Worf seem cruel, petty, & cowardly. Alexander's dad is the only person alive with intimate knowledge of living in between being Human & Klingon. His willful dereliction in helping the kid was heinous imho. Stare at your mother's corpse. Go be someone else's problem. Don't play games with him. Don't let him see me crippled. Don't have fun with other people. Don't laugh. Don't cry. Don't enjoy your life. Your humanity is weakness. It almost seemed like the only reason Worf ever even tried with him at all, is because it would've been socially unpopular if he didn't.

We could've done well without the whole mess, TBH

    Mod again.
Are you specifically speaking of regular characters or do you want to include guests. I'm guessing regulars only but a particular recurring guest has already been mentioned. If you want to stick to regulars, I'll modify the subject line.
For unpopular guests, see the thread below.

I don't think I ever had a problem with Pulaski. It would have been interesting to see her character develop had she stayed on.
The one character I think was almost completely superfluous was Troi as counselor. The show would have been just fine without her.

Watching Dr. Crusher is the character equivalent of having to put on a soaking wet hooded sweatshirt that is two sizes too small for you in the middle of a January blizzard in Wisconsin.

So...I guess that means I vote Beverly Crusher.

I like Pulaski, and Wesley Crusher. That said, my least favorite character, and by that I assume you mean of the primary and secondary characters, would be Yar. I never got interested in her. Granted, she didn't get too much to do, but she was too hot-headed, and impulsive for someone who was supposed to be a security chief. Maybe, if she had been given extra time and background like Worf, she would have become a fully realized character, but as she was in the first season? Nope.

Even if she was credited as a special guest star or something (wasn't she?) I just didn't like Pulaski.

Good that they didn't piss off McFadden too much and she returned.

Respectfully, What's a regular character? Main cast/Principle character? Someone we see regularly? Supporting cast? i.e. Klinger was a regular, but he wasn't a principle player until Radar left. Ro Laren was a regular, & even a featured player now & then, but probably not a principle character, depending on the definition.... eh... maybe I could open a thread for this topic

I'm seriously torn between Wesley and Pulinski...

For being the TNG version of Kirk, planet-hopping and bed-hopping, he's uncharacteristic since he doesn't take up any of the female officers in the underarted episode "A Matter of Honor" (though would any ship give up the second in command as such? In a show where the first and second in command beam into danger every week, the answer is "Why not? :D ". )

Riker has some moments of redemption, but ignoring the fact she almost never comes across decently when it comes to research (and how real life doesn't work the way she wants it to but thankfully everyone has conveniently stored duplicate backup org-- ugh, that episode is atrocious), Dr Crusher also is so woefully underused that her best moments involve moaning about alleged ethics, when otherwise vagrantly breaking ethics in other episodes whenever it suits her the story writers (e.g. doing autopsies (Suspicions)), now think about her being the near-perfect commander despite zero experience or showing signs of strain (Descent, for which aren't we all lucky she diddled with the metamagic shieldiebob back in Suspicions, et?), etc, etc.

I find Troi annoying at times but maybe it's just Marina Sirtis's accent more than anything else.

I never liked Pulaski. At all. I can't stand how she regularly talked to and treated Data like he was just a regular object ! It was rude, insulting and insensitive.
Everytime she appeared on screen, I would vent and make a huge fuss in front of the TV ! XD

I never had much affection for Tasha Yar either, but maybe it's mostly because she appeared very briefly when compared to other characters. I may have needed more time to get to know her better. I think she had the potential to become a very deep character, though.

They really should have just let her keep her own accent.

Well maybe, if she scaled it back a bit though. Her real voice is a bit street for an ambassador's daughter, TBH

Pulaski was great. And she was only mean to Data in the beginning... If Muldaur had stayed on, I guess Pulaski would have been a mentor to Data. It would have been a very interesting relationship. I also loved Pulaski's relationship with Picard. They were equals and she didn't mind telling Picard where to stick it. Loved it.

Instead we got boring 'puppy eyes' Crusher back. A completely unnecessary character, just like Troi en Yar. Looking back, the writers handled woman poorly. Only Pulaski worked in my opinion and she was gone after one season.

Pulaski and Worf had good chemistry together too. They drank tea together. I liked her as well. Apparently Patrick Stewart really missed Gates McFadden and he wasn't happy with a new doctor.
