The way I recall it in the Last Jedi a call was sent put to old allies...they didn't make it in time for The Last Jedi...but I am assuming they will come together for a big battle royale.

People have already speculated on Lando who seems obvious.

    What other possibilities?

I am assuming the survivors of the final season of Rebels...not a starring role but a clear cameo.

    Well
    Maybe the return of Ashoka???

    Wookies?

The Hutts? I understand Janna was a big shot but not the only one. Some might have been more reasonable.

    Corellians?

    Manadalorans?

Who else am I not thinking of?

I hope we are going to see Mace Windu and Kyle Katarn with his padawan Jaden Korr :)

I think Lando is the closest to a sure thing, since the film could use a closer connection to the OT than force ghosts can provide. I'd consider a Rebels cameo to be the next thing over to "impossible" if it hadn't happened in R1, so I'll chalk those up as "very unlikely." So far, the ST hasn't gone out of its way to tie in with the larger universe beyond the first three movies, and only incidentally referenced the other four.

I wish people would stop looking backward to old lore, theories, characters, plots, families...

What is the point of even continuing to play in this massive universe if all that is presented is couched in "small galaxy" syndrome?

The whole point of TLJ was that old things need to die. And from them the spark of a new generation or path can begin.

The Rebellion called out to those they knew. All were gone or decided to die on the vine, quietly. The new rebellion will be born from the myth of Luke's final stand, and the ashes of the old, with new characters, faces, stories and myths.

Or Lando can sweep in from his comfy casino or some-such and save everyone with his big smile and luscious cape.

I know it was a long movie, but if you stuck it out for another twenty minutes or so, there was a really neat bit with Luke after that part.

Luke (before getting his mojo back) thought you needed to abandon the past. Kylo Ren (the bad guy) thought you needed to abandon the past.

On the other hand, Yoda taught Luke you needed to be willing to abandon the past, but his sly joke about Rey stealing the Ancient Jedi Books showed that wasn't because old things were worthless except as kindling. Luke being the one to save the Resistance in its hour of greatest need, and giving his blessing to Rey as a Jedi rather than some new kind of space wizard, underscores the theme of holding fast to the parts of the past that are good. I mean, honestly, would there be kids playing out the story of Poe Dameron, intergalactic fuck-up, standing alone in front of a bunch of AT-ATs? Maybe after the next movie, when he's had the change to become a legend himself.

I doubt anyone's expecting or hoping for Lando, or ghost!Luke, or live-action!Hera to be the protagonist of the next film. But Return of the Jedi included plenty of prequel-era characters, and I don't think anyone thinks Yoda, Obi-Wan, the Emperor, Mon Mothma, or any of the others (depending on how broadly you define "prequel-era") showing up stole any thunder from the young heroes then.

I think Lando is actually a safe bet.. And perhaps now there is a way to give Denis Lawson a big enough part for him to be interested in bringing Wedge back... Yes, I know we need to let the past go and embrace the new, but the old school fan boy in me REALLY still wishes Wedge was in these...

The success of Rebels certainly could pave the way for the Madalorians to make an appearance as well as Hera's race. And don't forget the Mon Calamari. I don't think we'll need to worry about a diversity of races coming to aid in the new rebellion.

Watched the whole thing, ta. Twice.

I was referring to the spark generated in the kids at the end retelling the new myth of Luke Skywalker and the potential of others to rebel.

But thanks for pointing out the obvious.

We needed the "let go of the past" idea with episode 9, not 8.

Episode 10 or the start of the new trilogy is where the out with the old, in with the new idea fits best.

7-9 should have been the end of the 9 part saga. The way it is now, 7, 8 feel like the beginning of a new saga.

If Disney really wanted to let go of the past, it couldn't be easier; Stop making Star Wars.

I hope Maz Kanata is a major part of the allies. While I enjoyed her cameo for what it was, I wish there was more of her in The Last Jedi.

None, as this Star Wars is about letting the past die, it’ll be a group of rebels that never tell their allies their plans until the very end n say yeah we always had a plan.

Wedge and Lando were the first two to come to mind for me.

Seriously? That's exactly the fanservice they DON'T want to make anymore. If anything like that happened, I'm leaving the theater. There are plenty of old allies to both the Rebellion, Republic and Resistance that are still new to us.

Lando is the only one I'd accept.

I think the best way to handle it would be to give us a whole group of new allies and throw in one or two familiar faces. That way we can get some new along with the old.

This! In between Empire and Jedi, Lando introduced the Rebellion a smuggling ring from his older days, that helped the Rebellion in getting weapons or something. Now, he's living on a planet where they had a base, and Poe is trying to get in touch with him to try and reconnect with that smuggling ring.

Easy peasy. In two lines, you can set up something that goes way back to the OT, but it's still something fresh for older viewers.

Count me as one who doesn't need to see anyone else from the OT brought back. The big 3 are gone. Everyone else was secondary. Yes, even Lando. And an 80+ year old BDW just won't bring back the magic.

I'm fine with the movie having 3PO, R2, Chewie in background rolls, along with the small guidance of Force Ghosts Luke and Yoda (maybe bring back Ewan McGregor too?).

If we have to bring back someone else, I'd say dust off Hayden Christensen and have a meaningful confrontation between Kylo Ren and Force Ghost Anakin.

Hmmmmm... that brings up an interesting question that i'm not sure has ever been address (at least in "canon"....) Can a Force ghost appear to just anyone? Does that person have to be at least Force sensitive or a Jedi? Also, even if Rey becomes a Jedi, could she see the Force ghost of a Jedi she did not know previously among the living? Luke makes sense... Obviously.. Maaaybe Yoda too, if he is with Luke... But not Obi Wan... She has no point of reference for him... And more to the point, Neither does Luke.. It would be really weird to see Luke's ghost talking with Ewan's Obi Wan, even with old Ben makeup on... It would take me out of the movie...

Now... All that said... I would be open to seeing Anakin appear before Kylo... Since they could not have a proper physical confrontation, their battle could be one of chewing scenery! :D

And the award for most over-the-top delivery of the phrase "Together we can rule the galaxy!" goes to....

Actually, we've seen that Force Ghosts can influence the physical world. Obiwan pushed branches aside and sat on a rock in ROTJ (though I don't understand why a ghosts needs to sit or move obstacles out of the way). And of course we saw Yoda summon a lightning bolt. So, maybe an actual confrontation/battle between Anakin and Kylo Ren could be done -- though it would be very one-sided.

Do you think Mon Mothma and Jan Dodonna are still around after all these (in-universe) years?
It would be nice to see them again, even though we just saw them last year.

Well, Caroline Blakiston (Mon Mothma) is still alive and is 84, so her return wouldn't be that hard to believe at least.
