Further, there is no guarantee that Leia will be killed off. All we know is that Carrie Fisher isn't in the film and Leia won't appear as CGI or archival footage or audio. That doesn't inherently mean she'll die in between films.

Yeah, they could just have a character mention that Leia is off recruiting allies to explain her absence from the movie.

Another question: Just why does Dern's character (name?) withhold the plan from Poe? Wouldn't it have made more sense if there had been the implication of a traitor aboard the Alliance ship and therefore any plans were strictly need-to-know? I think that whole sequence could have been more immediate - and could have even bound Finn's mission more tightly to the rest of the story, with just one phrase hinting at that...

That would be incredibly lame and a horrible send-off for the character after 42 years. It works for Yelchin-Chekov, say, but not for Fisher-Leia. I'd rather see a state funeral in the film, rather than "Oh, Gen. Organa? She's off recruiting people on the outer rim. She'll be back any moment now.".... but she never was.

There's no way for them to do anything other than reference Leia dying offscreen because they've already said that they're not going to recreate Carrie's likeness digitally.

I actually agree that it would be very lame. I was merely suggesting one possible way of handling Leia in the next movie since the actress is gone and they won't do CGI. A state funeral would be appropriate but it would still imply an off screen death.

Where's all the Rotten Tomatoes quotes as a defense of the movie?? It was used frequently during the TFA movie hype, not so much now...what gives? Oh, right.. # wewokeup LMAO!

Poe trolling Hux is no different, fundamentally, than Leia spouting off to Vader and Tarkin in A New Hope, or Han being snarky towards the Imperial officer in charge of the Death Star detention block.

Yes, but Tarkin and Vader completely maintained their iron composure, then casually oversaw the total annihilation of Leia's homeworld, killing virtually all her family and friends. In fact Hux swapped places with Kylo in being the childish, impulsive one.

They said they're hire a non-white and/or non-male to direct as well. Red Letter Media was unsurprisingly quick to heckle them in return:

The fun begins at 8:50. (Yeah but the person saying the line they're heckling - she was white. So are they. And assuming people don't consider DNA anymore, but if they did consider DNA they'd be wrong on so many larger issues...)

In other words, the Disney rep's claim also suggests they might still do CGI anyway since they didn';t get Peter Cushing his direct consent (so you know there are some Trek actors who will be around for centuries to come to prevent their being used), and/or rehashed audio, or an off-screen mention (either as "She's recruiting elsewhere, look at this terrarium full of squirrels instead" or, far more practicable, how they handled Jenna in the Blake's 7 episode "Blake", regarding her off-screen fate...)

I'd rather they leave the character alive so she could continue to appear in other media that could potentially take place after IX. If they have a good story based around her death then I'd be OK with it, but I'd hate to see them force a pointless death into the movie just because Carrie Fisher died and now they feel like they have to kill Leia.

I haven't read this thread yet. I'm surprised to see a backlash to this film, but it seems to me the film actually anticipates fanboy reaction in its story. This was easily in my top two or three Star Wars movies and could well end up being my favorite of the series if it ages well in my mind. It was thought provoking and emotional, and it surprised me when I thought that a Star Wars films would no longer do that. It left me contemplating the story, the characters, and the themes--something I Star Wars film has not done since ROTJ.

The major theme of the movie is that legends take on a life of their own outside of whatever they've lived in reality. War heroes become something beyond and more grandiose than they were ever capable of being in real life. That's got to be a meta comment on how many of us remember the original series.

Luke says as much during the movie. He can't be the thing that people expect him to be because that's something larger than he as one man is capable of. But he reignites the legend in the final moments and people's stories of him take on a meaning in their own hearts that is larger based on their own needs and interpretations.

This theme extends to Kylo Ren's belief in Vader, Rey's belief in her origins, and even Rose's belief in Finn. When confronted by reality, we are always let down by our heroes because they can't live up to our expectations. It doesn't matter if they are a pop star or a Jedi.

I thought this theme was brilliantly handled throughout the movie.

I loved that this film touched a lot of the plot points of Empire Strikes Back without being a beat for beat remake of the film. I love that it was more serious in tone than The Force Awakens. I loved that our heroes plans don't always work out and that sometimes its our failures that are the greatest lessons. Poe and Finn will hopefully learn from those failures for the next film.

I thought it was a fantastic send off for Luke and Leia and the torch was cast to the next generation nicely.

I'm certainly anticipating the next installment.

How many people would be OK with recasting, though? 'Cause that's the only way Leia is going to appear in future films, unless CG tech is involved. And who would you get to play her? Billie Lourd?

You know, the more YouTube channel reviews I watch, comments on said videos I read, the more disgusted I am with people. People are being just needlessly hyperbolic and extreme about how "bad" this movie is. Hell, I just watched part of a video where a guy went into a SJW-rant because of, according to him, all of the strong female characters in this movie and all of the men, according to him, are bumbling idiots.

This movie certainly has its problems and flaws, there's some things don't make much sense, but JESUS this movie is the garbage fire that's any of the prequels.

Maybe it helps that I'm not a mega Star Wars fan so I don't take this nearly as seriously as most other people. I can see, mostly, where that's coming from being a big Star Trek fan and being upset at what's happening over there both between the movies and Discovery. But, cripes, even with the bad stuff I just sort of shrug and go, "not for me, not something I agree with" and let it be.

But, some people are going into a "raped my childhood" level with their rants on this movie.

There's lots of good moments in here, some bad moments and some stuff that doesn't make sense (especially after TFA) and maybe a touch heavy on the humor but I'll take the goofy, some out of place, humor in this over the fart and poo jokes in the PT.

Lighten up, people!

Yup, that really stood out to me as well. I also liked how that tied in with Kylo Ren's wearing of the silly helmet until Snoke mocked him for wearing it for those reasons.

I saw a tremendous parody on Reddit of what the "fans" would have loved to see. Here is a paste.

"Snoke is a clone of Palpatine, activated by Thrawn in the Unknown Regions. This needed to be discussed as Snoke and Kylo walk down a hallway before stopping to sit on a couch while twi'lek strippers give them lapdances.

When Rey handed Luke that lightsaber, he should have said "Ah! My daughter, you are the Chosen One who will bring balance to the Force. Come, let's train!" Cut to a Rocky montage of Rey and Luke swinging lightsabers and running on the beach in short shorts.

Phasma needed to be revealed as Boba Fett's daughter just so she's connected to the OT in some way. She leads an army of AT-ATs through space while the Resistance unleashes more X-Wings than there were Riders of Rohan at Helms Deep. Its so epic. So many CGI dudes die in the background. Poe kills lots of dudes. Phasma twirls her mustache and flees into space.

The last scene of the movie is Rey and Luke landing on Snoke's ship in the hangar and killing all of the Stormtroopers using Force Crush. Then another ship approaches. It is Old Leia. Luke and Leia hold hands and say "Wonder twins! Activate!" and the ghosts of Obi Wan, Yoda, and Anakin ignite their sabers. This group of Super Friends fights Snoke and Kylo for three hours until Snoke reveals that he is Rey's other father and Luke reveals that he is actually Kylo's father. Everyone yells "Noooo" and the ghosts disappear out of disgust while Luke cuts off Kylo's hand, Snoke cuts off Rey's hand, Leia shoots a hole into the trash compactor and she and Luke get in and make good their escape."

That's exactly what some fans wanted, and even then, they would find something to bitch and moan about.
