Is the 2009 movie a nostalgia film?

Yes it's a reboot but there are so many elements paying homage to TOS

    the main characters
    the uniforms
    the Enterprise (exterior)
    Ambassador Spock

It went back to basics but could it also be classed as a nostalgia movie? Same I guess with Into Darkness?

Yes and no. It was the first Star Trek movie starring Kirk and Spock in the 23rd Century since 1991. The uniforms look like TOS. And Spock Prime was a link to TOS Itself. It had things we hadn't seen in a long time yet it was young and fit in with 2009. So it felt old* and new at the same time.

    * In a good way, in a "we haven't seen it in so long, we missed it, and now it's back!" way. As opposed to Nemesis where everything was just old and had overstayed its welcome.

Into Darkness wasn't so much of a nostalgia trip but not because I didn't like the film. But because having everything back wasn't the novelty in STID that it was in ST 2009. The fact that we were having a reboot (and so soon) was a big deal for the first film. For the second one, it was just a given.

No, not really. It had some nostalgic beats, but it really worked to tell its own story.

It's no more or less a nostalgia film than any franchise movie reboot.

I respectfully disagree, it's a special effects film with loads of 'splosions and a few references thrown in to please the old fans. I can't imagine people still watching Trek 09 in over 30 years time like TMP and TWoK.

I still watch it eight years later. It is fun to watch. Which is kinda the point of a lot of movies.

Good movie, just not a good Star Trek movie. It felt more like Star Wars with cameos by Star Trek characters.

I think of it as a good Star Trek movie, and I'm someone who lists The Motion Picture as my favorite.

Different people, different opinions. It just didn't sit right with me for some reason. A lot of people love it though.

But, it's called "Star Trek." And it's an action adventure with social commentary. That's TOS in a nutshell right there.

A Star Trek movie that's a "good movie" is a good Star Trek movie. You either had fun or you didn't.

Not necessarily. I mean, they could make a great documentary on NASCAR, and if they called it Star Trek it wouldn't be a great Star Trek movie.

My feeling on ST09 is that it showed a good understanding of Kirk and Spock as characters. But it didn't hit the notes Star Trek hits because the solution to every problem was 'Pew pew pew'. So it was a perfectly decent scifi/action movie, but it did not stimulate the same parts of the brain that Star Trek stimulates.

For the original question. Yes, ST09 was a big honkin' member berry. It made me member TOS real good.

Not necessarily. It depends on the brain.

Isn't that the point? Trekness is in the eye of the beholder, and a pretty decent percentage of the beholders feel that way, that the new movies are good enough scifi action movies but don't scratch the itch.

I think rather than nostalgia it plays on familiarities that the casual Trek viewer would have.

Which is why fandom as the arbiters of canonization is so ridiculous to my brain :D

ST 2009 did pay homage to TOS in the ways that you described. But those similarities were essentially superficial. The movie moved at warp speed with all the explosions, shoot outs, etc. It didn't have the same feel as TOS.

I am going to borrow a line that Kirk spoke in "The Return of the Archons":
"The original Landru programmed it with all his knowledge but he couldn't give it his wisdom, his compassion, his understanding, his soul, Mister Spock."

JJ Abrams may have directed the ST09 movie with the knowledge of everything about TOS that came before, and he may have genuinely tried to pay homage to TOS; however his movie lacked the soul that made TOS TOS. Maybe it just wasn't possible.

Having said that, I still found the movie fun to watch but not nostalgic.

That too is in the eye of the beholder.
