Let's talk about the elephant in the room, this series violates Roddenberry's vision big time

Not everything in the future is going to be all hunky dory look at what they said in the 60'sthe 2000s-2010s would look like...

 

This is Voyager we're talking about... how much more complicated were you expecting it to be?

 

Maybe a tad more complicated than a role being what it was only because someone was fucking their boss.

My bad. You'll have to excuse me. My brain isn't what it used to be.

 

Roddenberry and Barrett had quite a history but she was kind of an average actress. Sleeping with someone or not made no difference to her portrayal though it may have made a big difference to her getting the role. With Ryan and Braga she had already secured the role of Seven of Nine and they 'dated' later on during the show's run. If that impacted on her frequency of being featured, it may have but I think it kind of contradicts the premise here that Seven was a ratings grabber right from the start. She didn't need to be sleeping with a writer/producer to have secured the role nor to be able lend herself to it. Surely she deserves some credit for making 'Seven' what it was. The 'what it was', in my opinion was more than a bimbo in a catsuit. Some of us looked past (hard to believe) that. I get some people didn't but I'm not speaking from someone else's viewpoint

She was absolutely more as a character. But, the decision was a marketing one and it will bother me forever, because I want to focus on the character but that outfit stands out from the rest of the crew. Period.

No, but I suspect that if Braga had been sleeping with Garret Wang, Harry Kim would suddenly become one of the most interesting crewmen on the entire ship.

Sure, but television is a producer's medium. Much has been written about the fact that many of the OTHER leads had some of their best scenes cut and had to "tone down" their acting, with the understanding that if they showed out too much, they would just have to re-shoot the scene or have the scene cut altogether. Again, this is an echo of the "sonic wallpaper" thing: when the producers order you to do something boring, you don't really have a choice, because your performance isn't going to make it into the episode until the producer is satisfied.

When Jeri Ryan decides Seven of Nine should be more than just a bimbo in a catsuit, the person she has to convince that that's a good idea is the guy in the producer's chair. I suspect that conversation goes a lot more smoothly if said producer is also your boyfriend.
