More Star Trek TV shows are "totally possible" - Kurtzman

Yet the producers will claim it is part of the Prime universe. Even though the stories and style are completely different.

 

And if the producers say so, then that will be the case. So what if Kirk and Spock met Khan on two seperate occassions? Who cares if there is a seven-foot tall lava creature also known as a "Horta" that they discover on a mining planet? What does it matter that they served with a Lena McCoy for several years in the late 2260s? She must've been another Chief Medical Officer (a ship can have more than one, you know).

And I know, you're going to bring up the uniforms and the bridge. But TNG and several novels already brought up the idea of a second bridge (a "battle bridge" they called it), and tie-in novels will certainly establish that this particular uniform style was something they wore on alternating weekdays.

 

I do hope though, that were about to see a trek rebirth. There is so much going on in marvels MCU that I don't even want to keep up with it all, but it must be turning a buck to keep going.

Trek could manage multiple series at once. I just prey they keep it measured, and put quality over quantity as an absolute rule.

 

I seem to have an odd minority opinion, in that I don't care generally about the future popularity of a brand name that is called "Star Trek."

1960s Star Trek is my favorite media thing ever. I enjoyed Berman Trek in its day. His movies less, and the JJ not much. DSC I enjoy. I so wish Orville didn't turn me off with its juvenile and forced humor, but oh well. An episodic series with sci-fi what-ifs and joy to it - I would welcome. As I do Star Trek Continues. But just because something has the Trek monicker . . . nah. Maybe if it's good, though.

 

If significant numbers of streaming and movie viewers worldwide are young (because they belong to developing economies), then it's likely that many of them barely know about the Trek franchise except for the recent movies which were marketed worldwide. In which case, more TV shows marketed in the same way are definitely possible. And since many viewers know little about the old shows and movies, then many changes can be made, and not only with the timeline, to attract and retain subscribers. Also, borrowing from older films and shows can speed up development time, as seen in the latest films from other franchises, from Alien to Mad Max to Star Wars.

 

I teach high schoolers and most have never seen a Trek anything, even the new JJ films. Surprising how many haven't even seen a SW movie. And DSC? No clue it exists; even my nerd kids aren't into it.

 

I completely agree, why does Paramount continue to focus so much on prequels, there are so many things that they can do with this franchise - without having to screw with canon. I have had so many ideas for the franchise, ever since the first episode of Enterprise. The possibilities to branch out are almost endless. Just a few ideas that I have off the top of my head:

A sitcom / drama that focuses on the Ferengi

A series about Starfleet Command and their internal operations

A series that follows the class of cadets as they progress through Starfleet Academy

A show or movie that deals more with the internal workings of the Federation, not mercenarily Starfleet, but maybe the Federation Council, the Ambassador Corps, the Judicial System, the protocol for a new system joining the Federation, etc.

A series that takes the form from another point of view, such as focusing primarily on the Klingon or Romulan Empires.

A show that follows and explains the Klingon / Romulan War

Focus on another known, but less covered race, such as the Breen or the Gorn.

A show that explains the origins of the Borg

A show that explains the origins of the Dominion

Another series like Voyager, that focuses on a ship other than the Enterprise, but takes place in the Alpha / Beta Quadrant. (The Excelsior, the Sutherland, The Farragut, The Phoenix, The Hood, etc.)

Perhaps an intellectual drama – Interstellar Diplomatic Relations

A series that deals with the Klingon Civil War


I'm just curious, what does anyone else think? I'm interested in hearing other ideas.

 

It's the same even for other franchises and university students. For example, at best most know that Alien and Mad Max movies were made many years ago, but that's it. And to think that many of them have more access to most TV shows and movies given the availability of various technologies.

 

You might want to read some Star Trek novels like:

There's the Starfleet Academy series that features future Trek main characters in their academy years and TNG: The Best and the Brightest which follows a group of cadets.

Articles of the Federation is basically one year in the life of the Federation's president.

There is the three novel IKS Gorkon series and its successor the Klingon Empire series (one book).

ENT: The Good that Men Do, Kobayashi Maru, Beneath the Raptor's Wing and To Brave the Storm.

The Typhon Pact series features Breen, Gorn, Tholians and Tzenkethi.

Star Trek: Destiny

There is one Excelsior novel, the Prometheus trilogy (the ship from Voyager "Message in a Bottle"), New Frontier following the crew of the Excalibur

While not a lot of novels purely focus on this you will find some interesting political stuff in Star Trek: Destiny, A Singular Destiny, Star trek: Typhon Pact and Star Trek: The Fall.

 

Thankfully the franchise is in the hands of professional creative people and not fans. Holy shit.

 

If it doesn't have a cape and tights or dragons and swords, modern "nerds" are relatively lost. Which is funny, because I frigging hate superhero and fantasy stuff.

 

While I do appreciate the fantasy genre, and I always have, I can completely relate to you about today's "nerds". I grew tired of the superhero stuff ages ago, and I cringe everytime a new superhero movie or tv show is about to be released. I have loved fantasy since the late 70's / early 80's, and continue to do so today, though I do understand why you feel the way you do. It is everywhere you look.

 

Admittedly, "hate" was a strong word. I like Batman and old-school Superman. That's about it for superheroes. Now a days, there are superhero movies for the most obscure and lame characters I've never heard of nor care about. And it's such a GROSS over saturation...I've never seen anything like it. It gets so incredibly old. And yet people still consume it like candy. BLAH! haha!

I don't mind all fantasy...I'm a Game of Thrones fan, so that qualifies I guess. That said, I couldn't deal with 3 15-hour-each movies for the Lord of the Rings trilogy and another 3 15-hour-each movies stretching "The Hobbit" into infinity. Again, the definition of over saturation.

I pretty much like anything that takes place in space, from the cerebral of 2001 or Interstellar to the action/adventure of Star Trek and Star Wars. I like some dystopian future stuff as well...Blade Runner, Mad Max, Walking Dead. The Alien Franchise is also a favorite...but I guess that loosely falls into "outer space stuff."

 

Me I never read comic books but I have enjoyed most comic book movies and shows though I got to admit even I am feeling the fatigue. Just a few moments ago I watched the trailer for "Venom" for the first time and was totally not interested. A movie about a Spiderman villian without Spiderman seems like a waste of time.

Never been into fantasy. I enjoyed Xena/Hercules in the 90's but those were both kind of campy/funny and only Xenia ever did anything serious from time to time. I enjoyed the Lord of the Rings movies and I thought the early seasons of "Game of Thrones" was okay but I got to catch up because I stopped watching after the Red Wedding because I lost HBO for awhile and haven't caught up. I think that is about it.

Not only do I want more space stuff but more X-FIles/Fringe stuff set in modern day. Also while I like dark and gritty I would like some more humor and escapism stuff to balance that out. Right now that seems to be down to Orville and the Arrowverse,Agents of Shield and The Good Place.

Probably not much of a useful response but I honestly don't want more series being headed by Kurtzman and Bad Robot.

Berman's Star Trek was definitely very average in the end, especially after how TNG had brought Star Trek back into public awareness and was successful enough that it allowed for two spin off series.

But the Abrams movies have been a turn off from the start from me and its spin off media such as the game and the comic has not been any better either regarding the quality of story telling.
Discovery did not make me change my mind either regarding the skills of Kurtzman and his vision.

I confess I have no idea for an alternative at the moment either as I have not been following the movie and television/online streaming industry for a while but Star Trek will not regain the position it once had back during the original series under Kurtzman and Bad Robot. I don't think he has any idea what Star Trek is really about despite claiming to have been a fan for a very long time.
