How long should have he wait around in Miami surrounded by Double-A talent? The Sherman-Jeter group have no money, they're already slashing payroll and looking for investors. They already threatened Stanton with being the only real player in Miami if he didn't accept a trade somewhere.

Somehow Jeter got preferential treatment, they had a better offer with a more stable ownership group that got passed over for this mess.
Apparently, Jeter is still working for the Yankees (this reminds me of McHale shipping KG to Boston). I actually think the Bronx Bombers are going to regret this move. Stanton’s a great player today, but his contract has ten more seasons on it. What happens when his bat speed starts to go?

He has an opt-out after 2020, and I'd wager they're hoping he exercises it, since they very badly want to make moves on Harper and potentially Machado next winter.
What would Jeter get if Stanton agree to go to one of the other teams? Not much more then he got, Stanton was controlling this one. With a full no trade, Jeter had to accept whatever the team Stanton chose to go to would give him.

That makes this move all the more puzzling. I know they wanted to move Castro and/or Ellsbury, but why help the Marlins out by taking on Stanton’s contract if it’s really Harper and/or Machado they want? I’m happy they kept Bird, whom I think is a much better player than he’s shown to this point, but their roster is now overrun with 1B/LF/DH-type players. How much longer does Sanchez, whom I also like, catch if he doesn’t improve defensively?
Oh, and I hope Marlins fans throw trash at Jeter. He’s actually worse than Loria, something I wouldn’t have believed.
I'm sure the Yankees will give Castro a voucher for upgrade zone on Southwest Airlines when he flies to Marlins camp.
I don’t think he’s staying put. The Marlins are once again shitting all over their fans. What I don’t understand is what Jeter’s endgame in all of this is. Does he want to move the team? Is he exacting revenge for 2003? Or is he just an asshole and a fraud like Mattingly (who once tried to convince Jeter to “fake it” with A-Rod as he once did with Boggs)?
The irony that this happened within days of the Yankees hiring Boone, the hero of 2003, is amazing.
AWful, don’t know how Cashman always manages to do this to teams. Made the Marlins take a bad contract (so 38M stuck on Marlins books), gave up no prospects of note, and Marlins have to pay 30M to Yankees if Stanton doesn’t opt out.

Well, it's known that the Marlins' ownership group is leveraged to the gills (as noted earlier, they're carrying $400 million in debt) and that Jeter's stake is only $25 million (though he's paying himself a cushy $5 million salary, which will probably be more than half the roster is earning by spring training). The majority owner is a retired hedge fund manager. But it's weird for them to be pleading poverty, given that they play in a mallpark that Miami and the county gifted to them--and remember, the city still pays the property taxes on the parking lots, and all upkeep and maintenance costs--which makes me want to say, "Um, yeah, can we take a look at your books?"
Anyway, situations like this are exactly why the debt service rules were first collectively bargained back in 2002 (teams cannot carry more debt than their EBITDA times their EBITDA multiplier, usually 8 unless they've incurred debt to finance a stadium renovation or construction--and the Marlins had negative EBITDA in 2016). MLB is already on the Dodgers' ass about this, but so far Manfred doesn't seem to give a shit about what's happening in Miami. Maybe it's a money laundering scheme, like how Jeff Loria bought art by borrowing against the team.
