Even Spock makes an appearance, and a pretty significant one at that!

So at this point... is no news good news, or is it massively distressing?

I’m going to offer this speculative answer:

We were in the period when no news was indifferent. But I’m starting to feel that the longer we get no news the closer we are getting to a point in time where no news is distressing. I’d say we’re still in ‘indifferent’ territory right now, but obviously if we still have no news one year from now we would be in ‘massively distressing’ territory. When we start into ‘distressing’ territory, I’m not sure.

If we get to ‘distressing’ territory I’d say the thing to be distressed about could be that the new person in charge of all this contract business doesn’t end up following through on everything we were promised about Kelvin Timeline tie-ins and access to the post-Romulus time period. Hopefully that won’t be the case. Just a worry I’m dimly seeing on the distant horizon.

The other thing could also be that the new person in charge might want to reboot the lines if they think that they might get more interest in the books, thus possible making more profit for S&S and CBS.

All it really means it there may not be any new novels until July or August at the earliest.
I'm not really sure I see the point in rebooting the novels, assuming the new novels will still cover the same era as the current ones, post-Nemesis TNG, post finale DS9, Voyager and Enterprise.

What I could see is maybe the new TPTB wanting to do more novels set in the TV series timeframes of the show, which should be possible while keeping the novel continuity intact.

The "point" a reboot would be much the same as that in the Star Wars novel reboot - accessibility for new readers and less/no continuity for writers/readers to entangle themselves with. I'm not saying it's a good point, but that is what the point would be from the perspective of the marketing executives involved.

I don't want it to happen. But there's the possibility it might.

That's pure speculation. There's no reason at all to suspect any such thing. The new person in charge is in charge of all of Gallery Books. Star Trek is just one of many, many things that Gallery is responsible for, and Ed Schlesinger is still the editor in charge of guiding the direction of Trek fiction (among other things), the same as he was before.

The Star Wars reboot had more to do with the fact that Lucasfilm wanted a new continuity coordinated between the various forms of media, novels, comics and what not which really wasn't possible the way their EU was set up, as evidenced by that silly "tiers of canon" thing they had going on. Then the franchise got bought by Disney who decided to latch onto the idea and have the a group coordinating new material among the tie-ins and new movies and TV shows as well to make everything canon. Plus, you know, they had to erase the EU anyway for new post ROTJ movies to happen.

We just don't have that situation with Star Trek. The only active on-screen material for Trek at the moment is Discovery, which isn't in direct conflict with any of the novel lines. Unless they want to create a coherent shared universe between novels, comics and STO (which I don't see happening) there is no real reason to warrant a reboot. Like I said, I can see more TV series era novels done as a means of hooking casual readers who don't keep up with interconnected continuity, especially given TOS five year mission novels are the best selling of the Trek line, but completely dumping the current novel continuity? I'm pretty certain the only reason that would ever happen is if a new post-Nemesis TV show or movie ever happened, which I don't see happening in the near future if ever.

Excuse me, but what part of "might happen" implies that I was doing anything other than speculating?

It sounded like you were worrying that it was a genuine possibility. I'm just saying there's no reason to worry, because there's no reason to think that possibility is even on the table to begin with.

Yeah it sounds to me that the change in leadership (I forget what posistion was said to have been changed) was far above the level that is concerned about creative decisions.

The only issue of interest to us which this new person’s responsibilities could play a role in is the supposed agreement with Bad Robot to allow reference to content from their films. We just have to hope/ assume that that plan isn’t changing.

I looked at S&S's website, and it looks like the only executive who's new to their post this year is Jennifer Bergstrom, who became Senior VP of the Gallery Books Group in August, though it was a promotion from within, since she's been with Gallery since its inception.

In other words no change unless Bad Robot decide they want someone at their end as a ‘creative consultant’.

^I don't think we know enough about the process to assume anything one way or the other. All we know is that the renewal was delayed because the new person wanted to review the agreement and have input, but that seems pretty routine and doesn't necessarily mean anything will be changed. It doesn't rule out some sort of change, but it's impossible to guess what it might be. Eventually, hopefully soon, we'll actually find out.

The powers that be could still republish the twenty Pocket Books titles that are not available as ebooks, as well as publish the ebooks as paperbacks. That, at least, would satisfy a market while awaiting license renewal.

Or considering that 2018 is DS9’s 25th Anniversary, they could also republish some of the earlier novels as Classic novels.

I didn't realize next year was DS9's 25th Anniversary. I hope they can get things with the contract worked out soon enough that they can at get at least one DS9 anniversary novel out for the end of the year.

Maybe they're just stirring us up to reveal the DS9 3 or 5 part series that brings back all the original cast and the lost relaunch cast for a huge adventure that I've been dying for.

Yes, thats exactly whats happening, I've decided.
