Spoilers Supergirl - Season 3

So that was a rather abrupt "Hey, I'm evil now!" moment. I was expecting a more gradual change.
I take it they'll be going for a Jekyll/Hyde thing?

When Sam's eyes turned red, it looked like she was possessed. So the impression I got is that Reign was a dormant personality that has now awoken and taken over. If I am right, there is a chance that Sam's personality could regain control if Reign can be suppressed or defeated.

Odette Annable is a one-season Series Regular, and the writers have been heavily telegraphing an "Alex adopts Ruby" story (Emma Tremblay's contract has a "Series Regular option" in it).

Throw that together with what the ending of Wake Up shows us, things that the producers have said, and what we know about future episodes, and it becomes pretty clear that this story isn't going to be redemptive in nature.

I don't think that follows at all. After all, how many fictional villains have redeemed themselves in ways that entailed sacrificing themselves? That happens all the time, so your pre-emptive exclusion of it as a possibility makes no sense.

Besides, writers sometimes change their original plans. A character they intended to kill off can end up surviving if they were popular enough with viewers, like Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. So even if you're right about what they had in mind when they started the season, it doesn't preclude the possibility that they could change their minds later on.

My take: They wouldn't have spent so much time making Sam a sympathetic character just to flip a switch and turn her into a monster. We'll be getting some more angst and drama out of the conflict between her two personalities.

Alex is going to get Sam's kid after Supergirl murders Sam, which is why they can never tell the muchkin that aunty Kara is Supergirl.

Did Kara and Lara get along?

I don't like it when I meet people who's name rhymes with mine.

Dating one of these abomination is totally out of the question too.

So...Ruby’s a Human-Kryptonian hybrid? Is she gonna be the Naomi Wildman of Supergirl?

If they do go for a Girl-Supergirl sidekick at some point they should go for a half Lena/half Kara clone. :D

Supergirl--
"Crisis on Earth-X"

Kara/SG:
Waiting for her to get over Metro-El, and fly right into the expected Braniac romance.
"Gross" (her reaction to the X-er SG & Arrow being married) was funny.

Alex: One-night stands are "such a guy thing" HAHA! Yyyyeeeahhh, right! Not in reality!

James: Earth-X Guardian...and he dies within 60 seconds. TELEGRAPHING courtesy of Western Union. The last thing I want to see is Kara learn the fate of Earth-X Guardian, and pulls that "its too dangerous" crap on James again.

Barry/Iris:
Easily the most believable relationship in the DC TV universe. ...and its telling how so many were against it and hating on the Iris character, much like the hatred aimed at James.....

Felicity: "Respect me on this" That's a two way street, as Oliver's feelings are just as valid, not that anyone would know that in the way the scene was handled.

Earth-X Reverse Flash: Tom Cavanagh seriously channeling Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan with the Earth-X Reverse Flash performance. The only thing missing is Lucille and the facial hair.

NOTES:

Earth-X:
Its 2017. Nazi planets in filmed fiction rarely work well, and this one falls into the "not working well" category. The original Earth X (as introduced in a 1973 issue of the Justice League of America) was a novel, sort of creepy idea, but back in '73, comics and film had not yet beat it into the ground with worn projections that are chained to only playing out in one of two ways. There's never much gravity to fantasy Nazi planet stories, which is necessary to sell the threat to the heroes, other than being cartoon villains. There has to be risk to both the main characters and the regular person, or its thin and as consequence-free as a video game..

"Make America Aryan again" Yawn.

Come on, the establishing shot of Earth-X, the Dominator...and all other FX were less than 2003 level video-game quality. There's no justification for that kind of amateur work on a prime time fantasy series.

Trading on the legendary Crisis on Infinite Earths is never a wise move, as there's no way this little get together would ever live up to even a borrowed title from that series.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade called and wants its (slightly altered) "hate Nazis" line back.

Biggest takeaway was the Guardian/James death. Once he's gone, who will replace James as the Supergirl character completely sidelined on the show?

^The Crisis name far outdates Crisis on Infinite Earths and the Nazi line was stolen by Indiana Jones from the Blues Brothers.

But at least he got to be a hero on the Earth where most of the heroes' counterparts are villains.

Earth-X Reverse Flash
That was Earth-1 Reverse Flash.

The logo resembles that of COIE, but "Crisis on Earth-X" was the title of JLA 107, the first part of the 1973 story that established Earth-X. Crisis on Infinite Earths itself was following a naming tradition that had been used for most of the annual JLA/JSA crossover stories for over 20 years prior to that series.

To be specific, the first ever JLA/JSA crossover was "Crisis on Earth-1" and "Crisis on Earth-2" in 1963. Gardner Fox had introduced the parallel-Earths concept two years earlier in "Flash of Two Worlds," and the "Crisis" 2-parter was his followup expanding it to the larger DC Universe. As Mixer says, every "Crisis" title since has been an allusion to that.

Yeah, starting with that original "Crisis" in 1963, a big two-part "Crisis" crossover was something of a summer tradition in DC Comics for years and years, culminating in 1983's "Crisis on Infinite Earths," twenty years later. And more recently we've had "Identity Crisis," "Infinite Crisis," and "Final Crisis."

Still, the title logo for the Arrowverse crossover is using a graphic/font design that strongly resembles the logo for CoIE.

Mixer, Greg, et al., of course I know the original "crisis" stories (I have the comics), but the most famous, important and branded version of any DC "crisis" was and remains the 1985-86 maxi-series. That was an industry game changer on the idea of "event" comics, and any modern day references to a "crisis" undoubtedly has its inspiration from COIE, hence this crossover's use of the typeface created for that comic series, among other things.

Oh, and I referred to the 1973 origin of Earth-X in my previous post.

"Crisis on Earth X"
(parts 3 & 4).

Kara/SG: I don't think i'm better than everyone else." Well, this SG has never been shy about making distinctions between her super-powered self and everyone else, either in dialogue, or by implied threat.

Der Overacting Leader: Yes, that was a horrendous performance. At this point, he should have twirled a moustache after tying everyone to railroad tracks.

Barry/Iris: Iris being proactive was a nice turn, as I know some fans wish to paint her as useless--particularly in this situation. She has a mind, and uses it....at least until the steam pipe moment. Anyone would have had enough time to pull the trigger on her. Their marriage is just another example of how their relationship is the far and away best of the DC-TV series.

Oliver/Felicity: Its about time Felicity gets Oliver's heartfelt desire to be married.

Negan Flash: Send all paychecks to Jeffrey Dean Morgan's agent.

Alex: Sooo...the fate of an entire world is not as important as saving Kara. Got it. Priorities be damned!

Earth-X Winn: So, this Winn has a backbone, and does not stammer / cower his way through life like the "real" Winn. That was refreshing to see.

Jax/Professor's death: Rushed, and no emotional impact when the edits have the scene jump around so much, there's not one strong moment of grief. Even the funeral, and its reiteration of Jefferson's status was hollow.

NOTES:

As noted yesterday, fantasy Nazi stories rarely work, and the way real history (and the known heart of the Nazis to anyone who actually lived through, or studied it) was misused (even within the speculative framework) was ham-fisted, childish, and possibly offensive to the central target / victims of the party.

James: Even in an alternate world story, he was less than a footnote--a character no one--except the Earth-X Arrow knew. Well, that's Berlanti consistency where James is concerned, including the telegraphing.

Too easy for the heroes to avoid any real injury and escape captors...well, except for the oldest among them (surprise, surprise). No sense of danger in that.

Again, no excuse for such amateurish FX--especially with Red Tornado fight , the poor flying composites during part four's final fight. Serioulsy, some of the Tornado work looked like pre-visualization instead of finished work.

Iris and Felicity was a nice paring of the untrained and their reactions to satiations they were not equipped to face head-on.

During the final battle, there was a nod to Captain America: Civil War's airport fight.....

"General, would you care to step outside?"
from Superman II. Okay, that was a fun nod.

Overall, this "crisis" suffered from being a story with little purpose other than to get characters to occupy the same space. As a result, most were there just to pop in--in Berlanti fashion--and blurt out some line designed to play on whatever the showrunners believe would be a character "moment," but it was an overstuffed affair, with most being there just to be there.

This crossover should have established Earth-X James Olsen/Guardian and General Winn Schott as good friends. Guardian-X's death would have provided nuance to General Schott's urgency to attack.

I had the same thought, but as usual, to the showrunners, James is a footnote, and Brooks was used just to end any questions (few) about his whereabouts on the Nazi planet. He should have been referenced as one of the special agents who had been striking blows against the government, being--as you suggested--good friends with Winn. But that was not the intent, as he was shoved into an overstuffed crossover, and killed off in under one minute. I do think its a signal that the real James is on the chopping block.

I'm kind of hoping Supergirl can "host" the next crossover so I don't have to spend so much energy playing catchup and deducing what the respective deals are for twenty characters I only watch during crossovers.

I'm kind of hoping Black Lightning will be set on Earth-38, partly to flesh out that universe a bit more, partly because BL was originally a Metropolis-based character with supporting cast in common with Superman (specifically Inspector Henderson, who's in the upcoming show). If that were the case, then maybe we could have a Supergirl/BL crossover next season with some of the Earth-1 characters getting involved too.
