Did the Dominion ever try to find out what happened to those 2800 ships they lost in the wormhole?

Probably figured it was something similar to when socks go in the washing machine, or when my cat gets hold of something remotely important and loses it in the wormhole under the sofa.

Would have been a heck of a Voyager ep if 2800 Dominion ships suddenly materialized nearby. :)

Yeah, but DS9 is really the only show that cared about wrapping up other show's loose ends that way.

Next episode of Discovery: "It appears this debris field is a few hundred light years away near to an unknown planet called Bajor. WHAT THE F..."

It would have been a very short episode if it was in any way realistic.

Agreed. If Voyager can defeat a major part of the Borg collective singlehandedly (OK, aided by a little future technology), those 2800 dominion ships are toast ;) (and let's not forget the disappearance of those 2800 ships didn't seem very 'realistic' to begin with.)

How should 2800 starships being whisked away by non-linear lifeforms actually look, realistically?

I think the best reasons were already said, but I still believe there's a delicious all-you-can-eat steakhouse in the wormhole dimension that they're still chowing down at during the special for Popplers... or at least a Howard Johnson's? :)

All sorts of places they might have ended up. A planet orbiting a rogue star somewhere between galaxies. Maybe they're experiencing a year for every nanosecond of our time.

They also show up in STO.

To add onto this, in STO's version of what happened to them, the Prophets didn't destroy the Dominion ships, they just moved them to the future.

I don't think it is explained why they didn't just get rid of them.

I always figured that the Dominion figured the Defiant used the energies of the wormhole in some way to destroy them.

After all, from the perspective of the representatives of the Dominion, Weyoun and female founder, thousands of Jem'hadar ships were supposed to move through the wormhole, Defiant entered, only Defiant exited.

It's a logical conclusion.

It would take quite a bit of explaining to establish why the Prophets would destroy the Jem'Hadar. After all, it took The Sisko ages to make them believe they should side against the Jem'Hadar at all, and going from there to a truly destructive action is yet another step alien to them. Since when have they been shown believing in destruction? Every ship that ever went in, also came out sooner or later.

It's not that the fate of that fleet interests me, I find it a bit weird that the Dominion seems to just accept this huge loss as a given without even actually ever commenting on it (AFAIK). Not because they would give anything about the fate of the troops -they probably don't, as has been argued before-, but if I encountered such a possibly superior "enemy" at least I would like to have a 'risk assessment' of future encounters. Also because this action could (and did in fact) cost them the Alpha Quadrant. If conquering the Alpha Quadrant matters that little to them, why did they even attempt it in the first place?

Erm. What was the Dominion supposed to do about it?

We don't see the GQ side of things again until the last episode of the series, and that's just to have Odo join them.

On the Alpha side, the Federation controls the wormhole through the end of the series. Was Weyoun supposed to ask Sisko what happened? Would he have believed any answer Sisko might have provided?

^why not, the Vorta are known for their diplomatic skills :)

Seriously though, even though they couldn't have done anything about it, it's still strange that they even don't seem curious about what happened. All we see is Weyoun dismissing the notion of prophets (being gods) as 'superstitious nonsense', while they effortlessly prevented the plans of those he claims really are gods.

To judge by the numbers thrown around in the last season or two, those 2800 ships were not a particularly large force for the Dominion. So it's not like the Dominion would fall apart unless they could get the fleet back or anything.

Given that, I can't imagine the Founders particularly caring where the fleet had gone. Their attitude would likely be 'plenty more where that came from'.

Of course when word of the alpha quadrant failed to come back, I would expect them to send scouts through to see what had happened. Presumably those would vanish too. So they'd be left with an unanswerable mystery.

Wouldn't the natural assumption be that the minefield was in fact still there, and all the ships they sent through had been destroyed by it?

If memory serves, the Dominion was still able to send transmissions through the wormhole, in the Ep. where Sisko takes back DS9, I distinctly remember a panicked line of dialog when the Dominion fleet fails to show up saying something like "I don't understand it! Our post on the other side reports the fleet had entered the wormhole!"

I would assume that it was a significant blow to the Dominion's war effort, I think they could replace the ships and soldiers within a few month's, but not days. I think once the Federation took back the wormhole, they had the minefield back up within a few weeks. I think the Wormhole Aliens probably only made that one fleet vanish, as a "favor" to Sisko.
