Which newer Trek franchise do you prefer, Discovery or the Kelvin movies?

Orville - not even close...

Gee, that's not getting old...at all....

Discovery is fine just the way it is, IMHO.

I thought the 1st and 3rd Kelvin movies were really good fun. Beyond especially "felt right".

Into Darkness was too long and really didn't benefit from the villain being Khan at all (again IMHO).

Overall, I'd say it's all good.

Oh, easily Discovery.

The Kelvin movies started O.K. and went steadily downhill to Beyond, which I loathed.

Another vote for "The Orville".

Most of "The Orville" episodes you could go back in and dub in different terms or names a half dozen times and it would be fully in the Trek universe.

LMAO, I was going to say the exact opposite. 09 felt like a Star Wars parody with Star Trek characters. Into Darkness atleast felt like Trek, Beyond is possible the most 'Trek' of them all, and I mean literally all not just the JJ films.

Ah, it's all opinion - there never will be an objective measure.

I was not a huge fan of '09 but glossing over the gaping plot holes and that I disliked half of the main cast, it showed promise. Unfortunately that promise was not realised in STID.

Finding out that Pegg was writing the third one I had high hopes, but not only did I find it stylistically indistinguishable from the first two, again the plot stank. Add in a motorbike chase, horrible CG intensive 'swarm' effects and a superhero fight at the end...

It really is getting old. Both shows have their advantages and fun points. Still not sure what the motivation is to make it such a binary competition.

Kelvin Timeline followed by The Orville. Neither have made me violently empty my stomach's contents, unlike Discovery.

If your numbers are up over the competition it means you're having more fun.

Well I enjoy all 3 but if I had to make a list:

1 Orville:Has the added favor of nostiga

2 The Kelvin Uuiverse movies: Fun action movies and very enjoyable updates on the classic TOS characters.

3 Discovery: Kind of flawed in big picture elements with the war and the Klingons are a flop but all the characters are great and it feels like a updated version of DS9 more than a updated version of any of the other TREK shows.

In reality though the best answer might be,"The one I happen to be currently watching at the time."

I will never understand this point of view. I have found great character development in both.

I think it's because you got used to the slew of Hollywood movies released during the last few years.

I wouldn't expect them to.

And that's connected to my first point, which is explained in my previous post.

Since I don't go watch movies all that often, I'm going to go with "No."

Just an observation on my part. I personally don't think taking notes from just fans bears well for a business model at times. Hence, I don't expect a franchise to kotow to my demands. At all.

I have my problems with both but I definitely like Discovery better. I enjoyed the three new films, I don't hate them like most people, but they really don't feel trek to me.

1.Galaxy Quest
2. Kelvin movies - ST09, STB
3. STID - funniest Star trek movie ever!

It's funny how some feel that Beyond was worse than ST09 and STID, while others feel that the NuTrek franchise improved and became more "Trek-like" with Beyond.

Yeah, I agree. I'd love to be able to say that. I certainly hoped it would be more 'Trek-like', expected it even, but I just don't see it.

We're all different I suppose...

I think the characters were carving out their own niche in the first two films, then fell back into TOS act-alikes in Beyond. I enjoyed Beyond, but it felt like a regression from the first two films. The first two I walked out of the theater with a "fucking cool, can't wait to see where they go next" frame-of-mind. Beyond, I thought "that was nice".

Even with the step-down in quality, I still enjoy the Abrams films far more than Discovery.
