Game has even made the front page on the BBC news web site.

And i am waiting for Disney to step into this mess, they won't be happy to see their IP linked to underage gambling, what a mess EA. lol

I hadn't thought about that, but yeah, the last thing Disney wants is this kind of negative press about their IP.

I wonder if Disney would go so far as to yank the license from EA for future titles.

That would be sweet. I'm surprised they don't have their own development studios considering the amount of material they own.

oh they had (now-defunct Disney Interactive Studios), until recently when they pivoted to focusing entirely on licensing their IPs

Don't know what possessed Disney/Lucasfilm to give an exclusive licence to just one studio. I mean that inherently limits their turnaround, no? Star Wars is the kind of licence that can and has done well across multiple genres, not just shooters, so to me it would have made much more sense to spread it around a little more.

Even before it turned out to be a mess on launch, I wasn't exactly eager to jump in as competitive online multiplayer just isn't my thing and typically these games have anaemic story campaigns (3-4 hrs in this case, as it turns out!) so it's not a good value proposition.

I did however check out the campaign on youtube because: Star Wars! And I'm even more glad I didn't bother. The characters are interesting and the performances are great but the writing feels shallow and so very clichéd, the narrative rushed, it completely looses focus in the second act and the third act appears to have been entirely omitted, presumably for the sake of future DLC.

On the positive side the writers did a great job at integrating the story into other canon materials in a cool way. There's references to books, comics, other games and even a short story.
Which makes the whole thing all the more annoying since it's clear most of the people that actually did the work to make this game really cared about it enough to put in that extra effort, only to have the whole thing tainted by studio interference.

Disney still cares about having a perception of quality, which is diminished if there is a glut of SW games (many of which will likely be poor quality).

Well, that sounds like a real downer. :(

    Sad!

I do think Disney is leaving money on the table by not licensing, say, Telltale to make narrative SW games. (I don't think those would sell BF2 numbers but they would definitely sell enough to make tidy profits.)

I think there's a happy middle ground where the licence is given out to a select few to produce a diverse but manageable selection of at least decent quality products. They don't *have* to go full Games Workshop.

As you say, Telltale would have been a good candidate for a narrative focused game, but so would the likes of Firaxis for a grand strategy game, CDPR for a KOTOR style RPG and so on and so forth.

I'd kill for a good SW-based strategy game. That kind of stuff is catnip to me. Empire at War was imperfect but I quite enjoyed that one.

Really, what I want is another game like TIE Fighter. Space-combat focused, lengthy and interesting campaign, lots of side achievements and other things to discover by accident.

I loved TIE Fighter & X-Wing Alliance back in the day but they just don't seem to make games like that anymore.

I really wanted to like 'Empire at War', but the ground battles just killed it for me. That said, while I haven't really dug into it myself I gather there's quite a number of popular and quite extensive mods for it. Clone Wars campaigns, Legends Thrawn era ones etc.

Personally I'd quite like a turn-based strategy game along the lines of X-Com, Valkyria Chronicles or even the Shadowrun games. That or something like the Tomb Raider games. Semi-open world/metrovania-esq maps, hybrid stealth/action combat, plenty of exploration and some light survival mechanics. Maybe a bounty hunter/smuggler centric premise, or perhaps even as a straight up relic hunter like Dr. Aphra.

Apparently Gozer...I mean the CEO of EA got a phone call from Bob Iger the other day and now all the microtransactions are gone...for now. No doubt they'll put them right back in after launch and the fuss has died down, maybe watered down a bit.
I'd like to say this was a win for consumers, but really it's more like one giant corporation trying to out greed another and getting a clip round the ear for it. The base game is still a rushed, slightly buggy, overpriced mess.

It might all be too late now as the EU and some of it's member states are going to investgate the whole gambling in age restrictive games, so EA might have just shot themselves and the entire gaming industry in the foot big time with this one, wereas before this whole thing all just flew under the radar, but now with so much publicity about this 13 age rated game having gambling and lottery services built into it, EA might just have caused the whole thing to come to a grinding halt, which in my book is a good thing, as almost all the big gaming names have slimely been dodging the gambling laws in games for some time now...........so i have my popcorn at the ready, should be fun. ;)

Any publisher who releases a full-price game, often selling you on "Deluxe" and "Ultimate" editions at over $100 a pop, that locks content behind loot boxes and microtransactions and other forms of unregulated gambling can just go ahead and fuck their own faces.

It's true but the fact is, is there are two sides to this story and the fact is we as gamers have been bad consumers and have allowed this stuff to creep up on us to culminate in EA thinking they could get away with bloody murder.

God I do hope that the backlash to this might actually do something to change the lootbox systems that are popping up everywhere now but I'm not hopeful.

The thing that really bothers me about all this, is it absolutely wasn't necessary, EA did not have to do this, they could have had their cake and ate it too, they really could have but it was greed that got the better of them, they thought with a P2W model they could sell just that few more lootboxes... When they could have had the "Han Shot First Emote" and "Darth Maul Stormtrooper Armor Skin" as examples of cosmetic only items in the boxes and you would have done just as well and not caused this shitstorm... But nope they were simply too greedy... Just insanely greedy and it bit them back pretty hard.

But the only way we're gonna make a difference is by not buying the game and we're yet to find out whether sales were significantly impacted by the backlash and I'm not convinced by the drop in physical sales alone as being a sufficient indicator of that.

What I am kind of worried about is lets say that lootboxes do possibly get regulated... What I'm worried about is what the publishers are going to try to do at that point, what shady shit are they going to use to replace them because there is no way they're gonna let that cash cow go without a fight or something to replace it because the fact is they're just too damned lucrative.
