13's Outfit revealed!

I was hoping for something a little more "business-stylish"; I guess I got used to seeing the Doctor wearing a suit.

I never really thought about it before -- perhaps because I didn't hear it put into words so overtly -- but the idea of the Doctor wearing a suit seems strange to me. A suit is a metaphor for ordinariness, conformity, being a cog in the machine or an enforcer of the status quo -- all of which is the diametric opposite of the Doctor. Granted, the past few Doctors have all had their own individual variations that kept them from seeming conformist -- e.g. Ten wore sneakers (or whatever they call them in the UK) and Eleven dressed like a tweedy old professor in contrast to his boyish looks. But still, the phrase "the Doctor wearing a suit" sounds incongruous.

It looks like you might freeze easily in it.

Otherwise I like it. It's familiar but still original, odd but not too much. And it's not dark.

None of the photos in that link look remotely like Jodie Whittaker's outfit.

Much like Pertwee regenerated with a tattoo I imagine...

And a med-alert bracelet, according to the "Devious" fanfilm.

As it stands, every Doctor has emerged from a regeneration with perfectly styled hair and shaven face, so SOMETHING's afoot in the process that allows a Time Lord to pick up and keep going without having to look in a mirror.

Kinda like how, whenever Wolverine heals, his mutton chops always grow back.:shrug:

Jodi spotted wearing the 12th doctors costume

It actually looks pretty nice on her. Should we put her & Peter into a "Who wore it better?" poll? :p

It looks like something an extra from season 2 of TNG would wear...and I love it.

I'm deeply worried when a comparison to the early seasons of TNG is used as a compliment. Fashion-wise, the 1980s were an abomination and TNG was the worst of it. (Alongside some of the truly ghastly outfits some of the women were wearing in The Terminator.)

That could actually be hilarious...even if the next doctor is a woman....if she's rather tall (like Amy Pond tall).

I dunno. As has been mentioned, when there's a major increase in the actor's height, they usually enlarge the costume to accommodate it. They've already mentioned having to let out Davison's coat so that C. Baker could fit into it. Pertwee seemed to fit quite well into Troughton's outfit during the brief moment we saw him in it in "Spearhead from Space" despite the 6 or 7 inch height difference. And had we seen the full regeneration, I suspect that the transition from Hurt to Eccleston would have been a bit comical.

On the other hand, when Doctors are smaller, we often see them swimming in their predecessor's coat, such as Tennant in Eccleston's leather jacket or McCoy in C. Baker's coat.

I like the outfit fine. But if the BBC's gonna botch the color of the coat in their pic, could they follow up with a correction?

I just want entertaining adventures. Nothing to be seen here is precluding that.

Nanu nanu! Great Mork and Mindy cosplay, those BBC costume designers are so clever. Wonder if the TARDIS will come with a chameleon fix which includes a giant space Egg..LMAO!

To be fair you could make the argument about pretty much any of the modern Doctors (aside from Smith's Victorian look). It is interesting that some people think the colours too bright, whilst others too muted. Those trousers look pretty similar in colour to Ten's blue suit if you ask me.

I think the trousers are a rather distinct shade of teal, but nowhere near what I would describe as "bright."

For something that is actually bright, scroll down a bit on this link til you get to the yellow and green getup:

Although a wee bit taller than Jodie, Mrs-Dimesdan has said she will dress up as Thirteen given they have a similar build and hair style. Just not sure when that somewhen will be.

Granted; the getup always was a bit idiosyncratic but there was almost always a touch of formality and polish in the Doctors outfit; Tom Baker notwithstanding :p
It may surprise some to note that Tennants classic brown-striped suits were made from trousers purchased (originally) from a local department store. The costume dept. needed about two pants to make one jacket.

So yes, I was looking forward to something at least partially resembling business dress, but with the Doctors own twist.
I shall see how this goes; maybe the costume looks better in action.

Her shirt does vaguely resemble Wesley Crushers ugly striped sweater.

Let's see... The First Doctor's attire was fairly formal gentleman's wear from an earlier era. The Second's was like a shabbier, more disreputable version of the same thing. The Third dressed like a dandy, with frilled shirts and fancy jackets. The Fourth's ensemble was eccentric and "Bohemian." The Fifth wore cricketer's whites with a coat and fedora. The Sixth was in a garish parody of formal dress. The Seventh had kind of an eccentric-professor look with the cardigan and porkpie hat. The Eighth went back to a retro, anachronistic look that was sort of a blend of First and Third (wasn't it basically a Billy the Kid outfit that someone was going to wear for Halloween?). The War Doctor had a heavy leather coat, a cravat, and a waistcoat, sort of an old-timey adventurer's look. The Ninth had the most basic fashion sense, just a sweater (jumper) and leather jacket. The "suit" trend was really just the next three.

Okay, I guess you could say that the early Doctors' outfits were variations on a "suit" principle, but the difference is that they were from a time when it was still pretty routine for men of their age to wear suits on a daily basis. A suit doesn't have to mean formality and polish -- lots of frumpy, disreputable characters wore suits, e.g. Lt. Columbo or Carl Kolchak. It was the quality and neatness of the suit that differentiated between formality and frump, businessman and working man. So, yeah, I guess the same goes for the various Doctors like the Second, Tenth, or Eleventh.

Agreed, and I also got a Doctor Crusher Grey Jacket Vibe from the coat as well. I could Imagine, Not that I'll be watching the show, The Doctor Constantly placing her hands in the jacket pockets while talking, much like Beverly Crusher, and the Brigadier's daughter as well. she too did that allot.

Tennant is the only one wearing a suit of the three. Smith briefly wore tuxedos a couple times, and wore a more suited outfit in Crimson Horror, but otherwise the outfits were never matched. Capaldi likewise seems to have mostly wore mismatched pieces, but with a more consistent subdued black/navy/grey color scheme. His purple velvet coat outfit has a matched pants and vest, and in some early episodes his vest and jacket are matched, but that's as close as he gets to a suit.

I'd also note, that a suit/jacket or some variation on that classic lapeled look has an air of authority that more casual clothing options can't offer. An air that I don't think Eccleston ever really presented and that Capaldi can pull off in a moth-eaten hoodie mostly due to his gravitas and age.

Oh, good point. I guess that, strictly speaking, the word "suit" refers to a matched set of items, not just what kind of garments they are individually. So you can be wearing a vest, slacks, and jacket, but if they're not part of the same set, then they aren't technically a suit. Is that it?
