When will the Constitution Class make an appearance?

I've never liked the CGI-models of the Connies. Never looks right to me.

Yeah. I like Greg Jein's physical model from "Trials and Tribble-ations," except for the way it was lit in the episode. (there seems to be this ongoing misconception that it's CGI even after all these years, despite all the pictures out there showing the physical construction)

Lucas also wisely put Star Wars into essentially static galaxy where no real technological developments happen.

Let’s not kid ourselves. As far as technological developments go, Star Trek is a 1000% "static galaxy" as well. Whether you’re watching 2150s ENT or 2370s TNG, technology-wise it’s exactly the same.

This. A thousand times this! And these were done by a fan. Imagine what the professionals with CBSAA/Netflix money could achieve!

Star Wars's galactic civilization is about 30,000 years old by the time the movies begin. They havent even explored their entire galaxu. The local area Trek takes place in, they've already attempted to leave the Galaxy, they've developed time travel, increasingly faster speeds. Development may not be as fast in the trek unifovers from 2155-24xx as it was from First Contact to NX01 era but it is still moving forward. If there are static cultures in Trek, the UFP is not part of it. That's part of the optimism of the show.

If we REALLY went sci-fi into some kind of reality like in David Marisek's "Counting Heads" the show would just be unrecognizable and probably difficult to watch.

That’s from the SW Expanded Universe. It doesn’t have anything to do with the movies.

They havent even explored their entire galaxu.

Neither do they have in Star Trek.

they've developed… increasingly faster speeds.

All Trek ships just like all Wars ships move in the same speed. The speed of plot. (And the warp factors in TNG are smaller than the warp factors of TOS.)

Then "it is no more science fiction than Harry Potter."

A counter point is 2010. 2010 uses the look of Discovery from 2001. They had the blueprints, and were not going to change the look, but 2001 was a visually stunning movie that did not HAVE to be updated (could go on and on about that, they even made "flat panel monitors" for 2001, pity they didn't with 2010. I digress).

IMHO, 2010 did the best it could in order to re-create the look and feel of 2001. The problem is that Stanley Kubrick had all the 2001 sets destroyed after filming wrapped.

And it's not like they were going to use flat panels in 2010, because in the original film those were rear-projected film, and (as we knew from TMP) those projectors get very loud and very hot on the set.

Obi-Wan "for over 1000 generations the Jedi blabitty blah blah"
let's say a generation = 30 years. Math. 30,000 years. I'm not pulling that from the EU. The EU just padded it out based on that statement.

Neither do they have in Star Trek.
UFP haven't had the same amount of time, but they've covered a good deal of it. [/QUOTE]

Plot overrides all else, and it is understandable after 50 years that writers are going to be wildly inconsistent. But there are speeds, even if they aren't adhered to. The writers are not expected to have a Phd in astronomy.

Then "it is no more science fiction than Harry Potter."
There are degrees. It is not Gregory Benford hard-SF, but it's not fantasy set in space, either, though it has those elements at times.

Nope, not at all

Nonsense.

Let’s examine the ever progressing Star Trek Technology shall we? From the 2150s in ENT to the 2370s in TNG.

ENT => TNG
Phase pistols & Phase Cannons => Phasers & Phaser Banks
Spatial & Photonic Torpedoes => Photon & Quantum Torpedoes
Polarized Hull Plating => Deflector Shields
Warp Reactor => Warp Core
Food Synthesizers => Food Replicators
Hand Scanner => Tricorder
Tactical & Reed Alert => Red Alert
Shuttlepods => Shuttlecraft

They’re exactly the same! They just changed the names a bit! No real technological change for almost 250 years! Only the terminology and technobabble used by the writers changed!

But again, numerous spinoffs before have made zero attempt at "reproducing the TOS look", until they felt it was time to show Kirk's ship...
Yes, for nostalgia purposes. At which time the movie-era Star Trek was only a couple of years old and nobody was actually "nostalgic" for it at all.

But it's now been 20 years since TUC and 40 years since TMP. If we're going to do fanservice, we can afford to service fans of the movies too.

Not that there'd be anything wrong with Starfleet having ships looking like the TMP one in 2256. It's just that Kirk's ship doesn't look like that at the time.
Unless it does.

...

Sure it does. Obi-Wan said, "For over a thousand generations, the Jedi Knights were guardians of peace and justice in the Old Republic. Before the dark times, before the empire."

A generation is frequently considered to be around thirty years. Hence, 30,000 years of galactic civilization.

But back to our regularly scheduled Disco thread.

True. But they also did it for Star Destroyers, TIE fighters, X-wings.......
What kind of starships have we seen that DIDN'T get changed significantly but still managed to appear on regular TV episodes and films 20 or 30 years later? The Excelsior, Grissom and Reliant models did. The TMP version ALMOST appeared as Stargazer but a new model was built from its basis, using its engine parts and detailing.

The TOS Enterprise did not, nor did any ships based on it.

So if you want to do a direct comparison, the "iconic" ships of the Star Trek universe were the ships from the movie era, as they're the ones that get reused the most.

Nonsense.

ENT => TNG
Polarized Hull Plating => Deflector Shields

This was particularly annoying, since it practically operated exactly the same. They even kept the bridge officer giving a monotone and rather random percentage countdown that manages to drain tension out of a fight scene.

I really wanted to like ENT, but like with Voyager it never seemed to really care about it's premise (atleast until season 3/4)

Imagine Star Wars today looking as in 1977...
If they use the Millennium Falcon... reimagine it!

It’s not like it’s an iconic design or anything.

Those Star Wars ship models had a ton of detail though. This is why we had the major constitution-refit (not to mention make up changes etc), the original TV models and sets just don't stand to anyone who isn't wearing their rose tinted glasses and obsessed about their nostalgia.

Yes, for nostalgia purposes. At which time the movie-era Star Trek was only a couple of years old and nobody was actually "nostalgic" for it at all.

Well, Trek has been keeping doing it ever since, including a 2004 episode and almost a 2013 movie.

But it's now been 20 years since TUC and 40 years since TMP. If we're going to do fanservice, we can afford to service fans of the movies too.

Heartily agreed. And TNG did that often enough, basically because they had the props and sets in storage, but also independently of that (they did build Yesterday's Enterprise, say). And ST:Beyond gave us the monster maroons shot, demonstrating how old school Trek still remains something they want to show off.

Unless it does.

But it doesn't. The fans know that, but more importantly, the Makers know that (klicking on the appropriate Memory Alpha entry for trivial assurance).

As said, though, it doesn't follow that DSC couldn't show us some TOS movie style stuff for the shits and giggles.
