Oh, damn. I definitely did not catch that detail. 
El is a 13-year old girl. They get jealous over petty things. She also grew up in a lab, and her biggest source of socialization is largely only what she sees on TV. As we saw with her confrontation with Hopper, using her powers is how she deals with her emotions. She doesn't know not to....yet. I thought her reaction to Max made complete sense.
Of course one would hope an adult wouldn't act like that. But El is still a kid, and she saw another girl smiling at the guy she likes. Max was branded an enemy from that second.
I'm sure by season 3 they will be fine though.

She reacted as any other 13-year-old girl with psionic powers would if she saw a boy she liked talking to another girl.
Nice touch, but jeez louise am I ever over those kinds of headlines. I'm a grump.
Also, it was only two scenes, separated by multiple episodes. If she continues to be cold towards Max next season, knowing the context of the moment she saw, then I agree it would be annoying. As it is, it's an understandable reaction.
That's a big part why it sticks out, those are the only scenes between them. It was just unnecessary and a freaking obvious boy fantasy thing.
Genre fiction historically sucks at writing women and girls, because it has mostly been written by guys for guys with mostly guy lead characters, with the occasional one token girl, so when there's finally two and they immediately hate each other over a guy, it just jumps out to me as annoyingly blatant male perspective.
It does kinda suck that this seasons that has so many good guy bonding moments, there's a lack of girl friendship moments, because Nancy and Max and El are all cool, but they don't interact with each other at all. I have no doubt they'll do better next season, I just hope they don't do it the way the usual girl friendships go, because apparently what you guys think we do is just talk about boys, tickle each other and have pillow fights in our underwear (well, we do do that, but that's not all we do
). But I'm fairly positive that's not how next season will go.

Phew! My whole world almost collapsed there.
Just finished spending a week or so viewing both seasons of this show. I was entertained. They have a good cast. I consider it rather light fare, but it's not bad & a lot of fun. I'm absolutely unsure of why it necessarily needs to be set in the 80's, but whatever. It just plays like a lot of pandering to my generation (These kids' characters are almost exactly my age, the same age as the Goonies, or E.T kids)
I find it really odd that a show which places such emphasis on emulating the Spielberg style, & nostalgic references to Baby Boomers & their Gen-X kids, would have so FEW actual Baby Boomers in it. Does this town have no meaningful old people around? We basically get 1 per season, both are running the shadow institution, & both of them, Matthew Modine & Paul Reiser, are way at the back end of the Boomer generation. Modine isn't even 60 yet
Come on... Get somebody like Tim Curry or Peter Weller. There are a SEA of actors from that generation which would fit perfectly into this kind of serial, even if only in a cameo. Their influence, while being co-opted for this series, is SO absent from the show, that I have to assume it's a deliberate choice.

Season 2 was definitely better writtten than Season 1. I have an affection for most of the characters, and I was thrilled to see Jane become the daughter of Jim Hopper. She needed a loving, supportive home - I believe she will get that with Jim.
I spent the last couple months working my way through the series, and I love it. The '80s nostalgia stuff added a fun bit of flavor to the show.

My only real complaint so far was that I was hoping we'd get a more detailed exploration of The Upside Down and what exactly The Mind Flayer and Deomogorgon/Demodogs were.
I'm really curious to see where Season 3 will go, they seemed to tie things up pretty well at the end of Season 2. We did get that bit with the Mind Flayer at the end, but that was vague enough it could lead almost anywhere.

I think it makes sense in the context of the two times she saw her.
Hopefully we'll get more of Max and El together as part of "the party" next season. I understand what you're saying here, but with her relationship with her brother and his friends, and the age difference, I think it makes sense that we didn't really see a lot of Nancy and El interaction. Finally managed to watch this and it was excellent. Near the end Every Breath You Take, the bitter ex/stalker song, seemed a bit out of place when Mike and Jane finally had their dance, but when they showed The Mind Flayer looming over them in the Upside Down, that made it click. Okay, now I get it. The brothers know their stuff. I guess it now knows that someone like Jane exists and I imagine that can be a dangerous knowledge.
The show's Twitter account tweeted a short video of the cast gathering for a read through of one of the season 3 episodes.
Season 3 definitely won't be out until 2019.

Yeah buddy! So the next one will take place in 1985... now let's see, in 1985 I was 12, and I lived in a house in Marietta GA on a Maple Avenue, while Michael in the show is around 12 and lives on a Maple Street... I swear, watching this has been like reliving my childhood. It's crazy.

So did you have friends with walkie-talkies? I did, but back in the 70's the only good ones were very expensive. Ours had very limited range... not nearly as good as those kids had in Stranger Things.
