It's inspired by the Winchester Mystery House in California, although I fictionalized it to fit my story.
The September/October 2017 issue of Analog Science Fiction and Fact, containing my humorous short story "Abductive Reasoning," is on sale now. Check your local newsstand or bookstore, or download using the links on my homepage.
I was looking at the Amazon page for @David Mack's The Midnight Front and I saw they've added some review quotes, including one from Kirsten Beyer.
Not actually written by me, but, as it happens, two books I edited went on sale today: All Those Explosions Were Someone Else's Fault by James Alan Gardner Black Goat Blues by Levi Black
Amusingly, I found out the guy who publishes my books wrote STAR TREK: VOYAGER: CHRYSALIS. (He primarily wrote Stargate novels) Now he writes his own stuff.
Thanks! I love that title, too. The sequel is going to be titled: THEY PROMISED ME THE GUN WASN'T LOADED.
Probably the worst defense anyone could use. "Why did you shoot your neighbour?" "I didn't mean to! They promised me the gun wasn't loaded!"
I've seen Dayton Ward repeatedly say on Facebook that the first rule of gun safety is that you always assume the gun is loaded.
Well, the book is about a ray-gun built by the world's most infamous mad scientist, but I guess the same basic safety rules apply.
That's good too. Those would probably be my second favorite batch of titles after the David Wong books, John Dies at the End, This Book is Full of Spiders: Seriously Dude, Don't Touch it, and What the Hell Did I Just Read? A Tale of Cosmic Horror.
For those who might be interested, the Tor/Forge Blog has posted Chapter 1 of my upcoming original secret history WWII fantasy epic The Midnight Front, which kicks off my new Dark Arts series. Check it out. If you enjoy it, be sure to leave a comment on the Tor/Forge blog and tell your friends. If you don't enjoy it … tell no one. ;-)
Then you'd better pick up The Midnight Front. It's not a sequel or even a prequel to The Calling, but an observant reader might notice clues that suggest both stories seem to take place in the same fictional universe…
For those who are curious about my upcoming novel The Midnight Front, are cash-strapped, living in the US or Canada, and feeling lucky, Tor Books is hosting a giveaway of 9 copies of the book's Advance Reader Copies (ARCs) on Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/show/257453-the-midnight-front Don't wait too long — the entry period ends on December 29, 2017. For those acquiring the book the old-fashioned way (buying it, not stealing it), it will be published on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 in multiple formats. There will be a special limited-edition hardcover version, the premium trade paperback version, the eBook version, and a digital audiobook version. All are available now for pre-order, and all release at the same time.
I know Star Trek books can be found "out in the wild" sometimes weeks before the official release date -- does Tor do this too? In other words, is there a possibility that Midnight Front could be found in brick-and-mortar stores before the end of next month?
I think that's the rule, not the exception. It's only top-notch, high-prestige books that get held back until an official street date; most stuff just gets shelved whenever the shelvers get around to opening the box it came in.
