Where have the black badges gone?

Mage

Vice Admiral
Admiral
Can't really recall seeing them ever since episode three actually, and the odd focus on it made them seem as if they were gonna be a thing.

Has anyone spotted them in any episode since?

*EDIT* Ofcourse they're not combadges..... My bad. Can a mod edit the title please?

I've been wondering this too. Episode 3 gave me the impression we'd spend all series learning more and more weird secrets about goings-on on the Discovery. But shipboard life has all kinda gotten routine pretty quick and there's no hints about any dark secret parts of the ship or mysterious groups on board we don't already know.

I've been getting the same vibe...

Since the badges indicate rank, maybe they represent some type of non-comm

But that one prisoner stated he'd never seen or heard of those black badges. Now, sure, you can argue that in real life, how would a random prisoner now about Starfleet rank insignia? But when writing a show, lines like that are supposed to indicate something intrigueing for the viewers.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. Oh, well in that case I'm not sure. I don't think they are Section 31. Maybe they are like Starfleet Marines or something.

Also really doubt it's Section31. I mean, how dumb are you as a supersecret organisation, if you actually have the Starfleet symbol in a different color on your chest??

But yeah, marines or special ops makes the most sense I guess.

Simple. They quickly realized it was a dumb concept and dropped it.

No sense having a special force guarding supposedly top secret facilities when you have convicts freely roaming around the ship and easily bypassing security systems.

They better drop those black light alerts as well.

Might be there was a private contractor protecting Starfleet secrets from Starfleet officers, aboard this ship of scientists where 300 experiments were being run in parallel and Lorca was waiting for one of them to pan out and win the war for them. With the success of the mushroom drive, the silverstripes working on the mollusk phasers and the snail shields were kicked out, and along with them went the extra security.

Yeah I also took it as "we already know why they exist".... no more mystery left... no point showing them.
Kinda weird and silly if you ask me.

Yeah, I have been wondering where they went as well. Seems strange to introduce them only to never bring them up again. And it's not like they wouldn't have been able to edit out that brief sequence if they decided later on to forget about the concept. Remember, when the show premiered, half the season was already filmed.

I'd like to know what the black badges were guarding that was so damn important it had to be kept mysterious and guarded by enigmatic officers with unique badges. It obviously wasn't anything to do with the spore drive, the engine room itself was never guarded by black badges. And there apparently isn't anything else worthwhile onboard Discovery.

So far, it seems as if they've dropped the ball on this. I'd chalk it up to a subtle change in the design of the away vest, like the addition of the shoulder-mounted flashlights between Battle of the Binary Stars and Context is for Kings, but they mentioned it in dialogue, so I don't know.

It's interesting that the black badges were only seen on the vests, though, and were otherwise the same design that are normally used for the standard duty uniforms (the circular Starfleet Command style ones are seen on the vests in every other appearance). I feel like that means something, but I have no idea what.
