WB's Justice League 2017 movie pre-discussion thread

The CGI in this film looks pretty bad to me. The shot of Batman jumping down to the roof was very unconvincing. And it looks to me -- not just here, but in every clip I've seen -- like even the organic part of Cyborg's face is a digital construct that doesn't quite clear the Uncanny Valley.

I agree, almost every clip has looked like an unfinished video game, though the latest clips look somewhat better than the trailer from a few months back. It’s shockingly bad for such an expensive film in this day and age.

Oddly enough, the dialogue is actually quite good, IMHO. Presumably the Whedon influence.

He goes in depth about the big "mustache" in the room ;)

I wonder who wrote that "We need Superman" scene? That better explains the differences between Superman and Batman than any example I can think of. Clark should be more relatable because he lives a normal life. That most writers and as a result most fans do not understand is baffling. Bruce/Affleck comes off better in that brief scene than all of Batman vs Superman.

The concepts it conveys are good, yeah, but it's a bit clumsy in the way it puts them across, just having a character state it bluntly. Not terrible, just a little stilted. But still, if the writers understand the characters enough to have someone say this, it's a good sign that they'll be able to show it as well once Superman finally comes back.

Just because they filmed Affleck on wires doesn't mean the finished shot is "real". I'd wager only the last little bit is truly him. Either way, his landing looks fake AF. Looks almost as bad as Bucky's jump down to the road in Civil War. ;)

The rest seems fine*. I hope it turns out to be a good flick.

*Except for Steppenwolf's cartoon-man face. Yeesh.

Oh man. I can see that very few people are going to be willing to give this movie a chance. So many have already made up their minds.

Are you saying that he should be more relatable as Clark Kent or Superman? I don't even understand this comment.

Danny Elfman giving a little homage.

I wish he had not done this. I hate it when people try to recapture the past for nostalgia sake.

Yeah...that's what trailers are for. No one goes to every movie. Not everyone goes to every superhero movie.

I'll probably check it out at some point, but I'm giving it a pass in the cinema. *shrug*

The dialogue scenes are actually encouraging to me. I expect the action and CGI to underwhelm, but just getting decent characterization and heroes actually being heroic would be a step up from every pre-Wonder Woman DCEU movie, and the clips give me some hope that we'll actually get those things.

Still, I'm waiting for the reviews. You can't really judge the whole from its isolated parts, because what matters is how they fit together, and that -- structure, pacing, and story coherence -- is one of Snyder's biggest weaknesses. Of course, those are things for which the editing process is key, so the fact that Whedon handled the editing and reshoots is highly encouraging in itself. But I'll need the reviews to tell me if it actually (at least in the reviewers' opinion) comes together as a functional story.

Of course, it's not as if I'm likely to see the film in the theater anyway, given how broke I am currently. Unless it gets amazingly good reviews, I'll probably have to wait until the library gets it. (I still haven't even seen Guardians of the Galaxy 2 yet, although my reserved copy may be in at my local library as early as today.)

I find the FX complaints suspect, as some are among the same who support and/or defend the Nintendo 64-like FX on certain current fantasy TV series.

God, this is sad. This kind of mentality is just sad.

I can recall a good number of trailers that I thought were lousy and yet I ended up enjoying the movies for those particular trailers.

This has happened to me:
- When "We Bought a Zoo" came out years ago, I wrote off the trailers as being boring and bland, but went to see the movie with my sisters out of boredom and ended really enjoying itt

- More recently, I was decidedly "meh" on Spider-Man Homecoming - largely because I'm burnt out on the MCU and because I didn't think Sony needed to make the collaboration deal with Marvel Studios that they made - and wasn't all that impressed with the trailers, but went and saw the film anyway - because of my loyalty to and love for the character of Spider-Man - and came away liking it way more than I'd been anticipating.

That's a lot of clips, I'm giving them a skip till the movie arrives, but if the "batman jump" you're talking about is the gif I've seen earlier, it's not a jump it's a glide, and it looked neat to me.

Bats are graceful creatures, they don't just plop down ;)

:guffaw:

I'm sorry, I have better things to do in life than wasting two hours and ten bucks on a film I know I'm not going to enjoy. To expect otherwise is just absurd. Besides, there are far better films coming out during that time I much rather watch than this one. There is nothing sad about that.
