Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

Moral of the story is online ratings are a horrible horrible benchmark to judge how good something is or how popular something is.

People are already fickle, online clicks even more so.
Since there is no accountability for online voting, that becomes even more true. The "anonymity principle" of it all makes it easier to be that way, since there are zero social repercussions.

Anonymous voting, of course, is a time-honored principle - because, you know, zero social repercussions prevents intimidation and protects honest expression.

Rendezvous with Rama, best modern sci fi story, has incredibly weak characters.

On the other hand, DUNE is full of memorable characers: Paul, Lady Jessica, Chani, etc.

Probably depends on what kind of SF you like. Some classic SF authors are stronger on characters than others, and even some books by the same author are more character-oriented than others.

"The Island of Doctor Moreau" is probably more character-driven than "The War of the Worlds," even though they're both by Wells. Similarly Stapledon's "Odd John" and "Sirius" are much more character-driven than "Starmaker" or "Last and First Men."

Personally, I've always preferred authors like, say, Rod Serling or Zenna Henderson or C.L. Moore, who put plenty of humanity into their stories, but that's probably just a matter of taste.

i may be biased because i hate ratings by numbers. i like reviews. well worded full sentences and descriptions of moments. but i typically dont like rating with numbers or percentages or aggregate scores.

Ratings by graph and numbers probably gives a wider option than maybe selectively reading like-minded reviews.

i think numbers represent a group which is always framed by context. If 100 metal heads do a bunch up or down votes on a bieber album, or a bunch of 1 outta tens, i dont think thats a good representation of anything nor is ot a giving of real options.

Most reviews are agenda driven and thats not helpful either. im not talking about an echo chamber of one liner reviews all hi fiving one another in a circle jerk of sorts. im talking about someone who gives description to what the show or film is. who cares if the reviewer LIKED it. i wanna know that they are apt at providing a description, one that assists me in deciding if i wanna see that type of entertainment.

frankly i think whether or not a reviewer, or a mass "liked" it is irrelevant. its the different between review and critique. one is telling people what the thing is, and what its intended to be. the other usually amounts to using too many adjectives cause someone likes the sound of their own voice.

Personally I'm happy enough to gauge reaction and if there is no interaction about this reaction that is fine too. Much like a bulletin/message board type of forum. Figures and graphs too reflect an experience and they are useful tools. If someone presents a recap then that gives the basic synopsis. A review is more personal as it is naturally filtered, however that too is okay to simply stand. The more the merrier. Discussion is something optional as well. Like restaurant reviews. Was the food spicy? Yep. How spicy? Five on the heat scale. Sometimes numbers and inputs find a reference point, along with a description.

All good.

Yes, the whiners are the minority and they are the loudest. Just have to look at the DISC episode polls to see a majority of the Trek fans give it a 7 to 10 score.

Maybe the same mentality also works for other shows? So that Star Trek 'down votes' are equal to Orville 'down votes'.

I get the sense that all this talk of online ratings is really just grasping at straws given that we have no way of telling how well DISCO is performing on the app compared to other app exclusive shows like STRANGER THINGS because the companies keep that a secret. I'm sure if this show was on a network many fans and haters would be analyzing every detail about the Nielsen ratings to back up their arguments of how great or terrible it's performing.

Since we don't have that, it's all about meaningless user ratings on websites. IMDB has TWOK rated below ST09 and STID.

Never underestimate a minority opinion holder's need to justify the corrrectness of their opinion. It's a "me against the world" mentality that they relish.

The audience reviews at Rotten Tomatoes for both Discovery and The Orville are pretty varied, some very well expressed, and pretty much support the range of opinion you find in the voting.

Audience reviews and just a zero star vote are two different things.

You should be just as concerned about perfect scores corrupting the data. I tend to think they just cancel each other out.
