The explanation is they didn't want to punish the team by suspending Gurriel during the World Series.

I didn't even see the gesture when it happened and didn't know it occurred until my phone was hit with notifications about it this afternoon.
Honestly, I didn't see this as that big a deal. Is everyone overreacting? That's a cop-out explanation, though. Manfred might as well have just gone to a podium and said, "We take this seriously, but not seriously enough to affect the World Series, just some meaningless games in April that no one will care about," and it's particularly galling considering he had the balls to say that Gurriel's behavior "has no place in our game." It's a bush league, "benched for one quarter against a scrub team in football" punishment.
Edit: I feel like leaving a voicemail at the league office tonight and asking, "Can you please explain the standard for exactly how racist you have to be to get suspended in the World Series?"
True. But I think that is over the top too.Overreacting?
What would happen to any one of us if we did that to a co-worker?
Would our boss say "I'm going to suspend you for a week without pay. But not until after the holiday rush. We're going to be really busy until then."

It wasn't just the gesture, it's that he was also very clearly saying "chinito," which in Spanish-speaking cultures is about as nasty a slur as dropping the n-word.

Completely agree w/ all of these points. Gurriel should have been suspended for the remainder of the postseason. Manfred (as usual) missed the boat on this one.
