Spoilers Preview images for "Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad"

That's true, I suppose, but it seemed *too* modern for me.

And suddenly Tilly is a drunken social butterfly?

Meh.

Compared to the stuffy, formal meet and greets and lame mess hall soiree's with 1950's music that we've been subjected to in previous series, this actually looks like fun. Bonus points for the contemporary music.

Actually, it's a bit like the party in You Are Cordially Invited. There is a comment in the DS9 Companion that the writers wanted to make the Sutherland a "party ship", with wild events occurring whenever it dropped by.

The problem with the contemporary "music" (I personally don't view an art form that has rhythm and rhyme sans melody as music) is that it will most likely swiftly become dated.

Something that is clearly not a clone of some contemporary style would probably have more replay value for future viewers.

The exception could be made if it was somehow explained that the party was a "retro" event where they were specifically trying to imitate popular things from a past era.

My problem with only using things like classical period music is it makes the assumption that it was and is the only music that would be deemed worthy of still being listened to centuries later. I have never bought that. I've always had a problem with that. Would some people love it? Yeah but not everyone would and its certainly not the music people would listen to in order to relax in a stressful situation where the goal is to have fun to increase morale. That just might be me.

They should have a band

Ah, but with classical music you already have evidence that it has qualities which give it a greater likelihood of continuing to be listened to. After all, it has persisted through many centuries already.

If you play something that is a new style right now, you have no evidence that said style isn't just a brief fad that will quickly die out and be forgotten.

And it doesn't necessarily have to be an actual or clone version of some actual musical style -- the music in the Mos Eisley Cantina isn't dated just because it sounds alien enough to not make it tied to a specific era.

The potential problem with the rap is that if years from now that style has completely died out then this scene will be badly dated.

When I was a subscriber to BBC Classical Music, they had articles about how classical music was becoming less popular and that fewer people were listening to it. Classical music feels to me to be part of what was once a well-rounded education. Speaking about my country here, our education is becoming less well-rounded and the students are not being exposed to it as much. There will probably be, for the foreseeable future, people who will hunt it out and listen to it. However, for the majority, it will be a historical artifact.

As for Star Trek, for a long time, it felt that the series ping-ponged between classical music and generic elevator music which did not inspire the soul. It was good to hear some other genres of music. For the scene in the mess hall, I am more curious about the song's title and who sang it, then about it becoming dated. I take the scene as being representative of a 23rd century social event, with contemporary features thrown in so that we can understand what is taking place.

Not a fan of the music choice. And I think going with such a contemporary style for the party is detremental to immersion. Regardless of whether or not you like that kind of party, there is no way parties still look like that in 200 years.

Look like what exactly?

Look like what exactly?
It looks like a 21st century college frat party, from beer pong, rap, lighting, etc.

I understand their choice using it, most viewers will find it relatable. But I agree that it does stretch credulity slightly to believe that parties 200 years from now will be pretty much unchanged.

What were parties like 200 years in our past? Not like that one. And future ones will probably be pretty different as well.
