MLB 2017: The Yankees are dead, Yankees burn in hell

what about all those White Sox fans that stormed the field during Disco Demolition?

I suspect that not all of them were Sox fans, or indeed any kind of fans.

Sweeps in the World Series are fantastic if it's your team doing the sweeping. Nothing sweeter than watching the Red Sox sweep the Cards in 2004 and the Rockies in 2007

Sometimes sweeps can be dull, though. Like in 2012.

I hope everyone watched Game 2 no matter your allegiances because it was crazy, especially in the final innings, to include extra innings. From Dave Roberts making baffling pitcher changes to home run after home run (in the extra innings!) to an umpire saving Chris Devenski's ass by accidentally blocking a throw into the outfield.

Joe Girardi won't return for the Yankees next year. Seems to be his decision. Wonder where he'll end up? Assuming he even wants to go straight back into coaching. On a more pressing note, who do the Yankees get that's any better?

Too bad I missed last night's game, sounded awesome. But no way I'm staying up for an extra innings game that starts at like 830 ET, gotta start these earlier. I know, Prime Time, plus this time West Coast games too (not that the time changes when they are both east coast teams), but just can't commit to it. Tough to start earlier, I guess, but 7pm ET work better, still have Prime Time coverage, and pretty much be over by 11pm no matter what. Since my team isn't in it, good with just the recaps and the first inning or so, I guess.

They definitely screwed up when Scully called for a lefty and it wasn't Koufax, though. I think he was there for game 1? Fun either way.

^Shocking that Girardi was let go. never overly liked him personally, but generally seemed like a good manager and got a lot out of his teams. Optimistic about Alex Cora for the Red Sox, but wonder if they'd have gone in a different direction if Girardi was available at the time. Couple landing spots already gone, will see where he goes or if he takes a year off to wait for something better. I guess the Nationals are still a desirable team, but other than that, do you rebuild the Phillies, or...? And seemed pretty clear that the Yankees said no, not him, so not his decision IMO.

The stories on espn.com point to it being the teams' decision.

As far as who replaces him? Someone along the lines of Joe Maddon would seem to make sense. Not the Joe Maddon who makes screwy decisions, but the Joe Maddon who knows how and when to play young guys and when to sit them.

There are managers out there who abolutely can't stand putting rookies on the field for whatever reason.

The Cubs did a little housecleaning.

Gone: pitching coach Chris Bosio, hitting coach John Mallee, 3B coach Gary Jones
Incoming: pitching coach ???, hitting coach Chili Davis, 3B coach Brian Butterfield

None of the outgoing coaches are real shockers. They couldn't do anything on either side of the ball for most of the year, outside of hitting home runs.

I have no idea about Chili as a hitting coach, but it seems they only dumped Mallee when Chili became available.

Joe Girardi, the winningest manager in the major leagues over the last ten years, has now been fired after seasons in which he:

- Won manager of the year
- Took his team to Game 7 of the ALCS despite his team being projected to miss the playoffs by a wide margin

Disappointed but not surprised that Brian Butterfield left the Red Sox with a new manager coming in. One of the best third base coaches, and more importantly, infield coaches, in the business.

Yep, downside of trying to hire a new manager who is still in the playoffs; you kinda have to wait while everyone else is free to maneuver. Butter was too aggressive at 3B, but suspect that was a management style/decision vice him just not understanding how to coach. Would have liked to have kept him, maybe as bench coach to put some experience behind Cora.

Maybe something to be said for a clean sweep, though. The more of the old group you keep, the less it feels like things changed.

Same with Davis, though, he's another loss for the Sox. Will be interested to see who Cora brings in once he starts working on his staff...

The Cubs have hired Jim Hickey (former Tampa Bay Rays PC) as pitching coach.

Outside of 1B coach Brandon Hyde, bench coach (for the moment) Dave Martinez and some assistant coaches, a real housecleaning.

So, what does getting to within one win of the world series get ya?

Fired.

I wasn't the biggest Giardi fan, but damn... He did a good job with the baby bombers.

So who's going to take his seat? My money is on the minor league guy. Al.... somebody...

I believe you're thinking of Al Pedrique.

It's almost certainly not going to be a big name; first, there really isn't anyone high-profile available outside of Dusty Baker and there's no way he'd go to New York, and second, this is the second straight time a manager has left the team due to his relationship with Cashman going sour. (Girardi also reportedly had tension with Sanchez, Chapman and others.)

After the success of this season, Cashman's political capital within the organization is probably higher than it's been since 1999 or 2000 or so, so he's going to hire a more low-key personality who will follow the mandates of the front office--which is becoming more and more of a trend in baseball, with the field manager merely following marching orders. I think Cashman is done with $5 million managers for a while.

I would imagine that Tony Pena and Rob Thomson are on the short list.

Yuli Gurriel has been suspended for five games for his little racist act in the dugout last night.

The suspension is effective at the beginning of next season.

Way to go, Manfred. You fucking dumbass.
