Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

Christ, you'all are carrying on about this like it's the American Civil War or something, and it's a show with a gelatinous crewman making dick jokes versus a show with a huggable tardigrade who travels through space. You can all do with not taking it so damn seriously.

About the Tradigrade, it travels thorough space via MUSHROOMS...YOU FORGOT THE MUSHROOMS! (If you're going to get technical - get it right!) :wah::techman:
;)

How about grow some thicker skin? The harshest thing said so far from what I've seen is a variation of "your show sucks." If you can't handle that without calling in the grammar police then I'd suggest staying away from discussion forums.
No, there was worse being said before someone came and got rid of the insulting posts. I can handle a mature discussion on either current series, but when it goes over the line and people insult each other, that’s too much. They’re just TV shows.

I like both shows too. Miracle of miracles! It's a wonder I haven't beaten myself up like in Fight Club yet.

Sorry, I took a little too much LDS.
Space Mormons? O_o

This episode is so close to fantastic. when the writing finally lets the drama breathe without so many boner jokes and halftard antics then the drama actually works.

however its utterly ridiculous how ignorant LaMarr is about the situation he is in. the very idea that this idiot exists in any profession that requires maneuvering any culture is nuts. Ed's general lax attitude and coming out on top in spite of utterly poor judgment... kind of high level forest gumping his way through is also kinda ridiculous.

so... if im supposed to genuinely take this seriously they really need to adjust some key points about the episodes focus. i mean... its one thing when Wessley kinda trips over a barrier to some plant. LaMarr is a grade a dumbass and Ed has the worst judgement ever. all of which works for humor but makes virtually the rest of the episode hard to take seriously. it was funny, very truly funny, but mostly cause LaMarr is an inept idiot. Ed aint very bright either. the more the show goes on i find the idea that Ed captains anything is hilarious... but impossible to take seriously.

stupidly funny though at some points.

I haven't seen the latest episode yet, but I often keep wondering why Ed has the captain's chair at all when Kelly is the one who seems better equipped & qualified to be a captain. I may have a girl crush on Adrianne Palicki, however, and this could be creating some heavy bias. ;) She just is so much smarter, better with command decisions, more professional and tougher, too. COME AT ME! :rommie:

because its a comedy. i mean what you say makes sensible sense.... and it would be less funny. i mean if beavis and butthead were responsible adults whod watch?

Well, I don't much care for the crass dude bro comedy of the show, actually, which is why I find it a weird show to watch & enjoy. I know other people do appreciate this kind of humor, though, personal tastes and all. But the dick jokes and contemporary pop culture references are just horribly jarring to me. I guess I like the show despite the comedic parts, not because of it. If that makes sense.
I'm not the kind of person who would choose to watch Beavis and Butthead. I'm more of a Frasier, MASH, Scrubs, Community kinda gal.

I prefer the Orville when it sorta tries to insert some drama or moral problems into the mix. At times, however, it feels a touch trite and predictable, which may just be a symptom of it being episodic in format, trying to wrap things up in an hour most of the time. I like the adventure of the week aspect, I like the world building and exploration stuff. I think Kelly and Ed have pretty great chemistry. Bortus is an interesting 2nd officer. The doctor seems cool. The rest I don't really care about...yet.

I think the show has a lot going for it. It's definitely entertaining. But it almost feels like it's trying to have the best of both worlds. Trying to push the gross edgy humor while also being almost too earnest in wanting to be taken seriously as a sci fi drama at other times. I'm not sure if it's completely succeeding at either yet. Hopefully it will find the right balance over time. It has a lot of potential.

Interesting comments from David Goodman (former ENT writer/producer, and current Orville writer/producer) about Discovery and rivalry between the two show:
it has a great cast and looks awesome. It is a little darker than I like my Star Trek, but I like it. It is very well written. I liked the format of a continuing story, because it says Star Trek can survive in different forms and formats. I am interested to see where they go. It is a great show. I don’t see the rivalry. For me, I got two shows I like to watch. It’s funny to me that people feel like they have to create some kind of feud or rivalry. There are fifteen cop shows, why can’t we have two of these? Oh my god, there are two shows set on spaceships, they have to compete with one another. I wish there were fifty of them. I read Asimov. I read Heinlein. I read Clarke. I don’t have to just read one, same thing goes for television. I am really happy that Star Trek continues. I am a big Star Trek fan.

I generally tend not to judge shows too much and just accept them as entertainment. There's enough in both shows to keep me engaged and wanting more.

The Orville is billed as a comedy and is funny. Yet it's not over the top parody like Meet the Spartans. There are parts clearly meant to poke fun at some of the more serious aspects of Trek, yet it still does provoke thought, and brings some new ways of looking at things.

Discovery is actiony, has some great character moments. The Klingons need improvement in dialogue and mannerisms. I like the serialized nature and the challenges thrown the characters' way. Like the visuals so far and the plot. Some unintentional funny moments here too.

Anyone want to consider these two shows as two halves of the same coin, complementing each other?

thats what i think is its biggest problem.

i personally cannot take a show that seriously when the ship and its missions are staffed by people this stupid. i can find it funny.... but cant take it seriously.

say whatever you want about MASH but they were competent.

Yet you're watching Discovery despite the behavior of just about everyone in the first two hours and the show's continued "idiot plotting." Did you watch TNG at all? That series relied for much of its plotting on the main characters often being extremely, ah, slow on the uptake.

you aint wrong and whos to say i took every episode of that show seriously?

but so far on orville every episode seems to highlight humor at the expense of bungling and their ineptitude.

so when a serious moment lands, like an alien culture excercising their fickle sensibilities by way of absolute democracy, its hard to take seriously when the one in trouble, is in trouble for dry humping a statue, and then continues to be so ignorant of his responsibility and situation. like i said its funny, but taking it seriously? yeah i cant do it.

Idiot plotting is a huge part of pretty much all entertainment. Heck, in one episode of TOS, Lazarus steals the Enterprise dilithium crystals after telling them he was going to take them. It is just more of Star Trek fans deluding themselves about the intelligence of the franchise.
