Discovery and "The Orville" Comparisons

Reopening so people can discuss the new episode airing tonight. Sorry about the delay. Please try and remain civil and remember that they're just TV shows and you can like or dislike both without it having some deeper meaning. In fact, I'm going to remove the "versus" part of the title to make things hopefully slightly less cutthroat and competitive.

Thanks. I appreciate the change. I made the thread to discuss a single issue, and it has turned into the home of a lot of silliness.

In any case, I find myself enjoying The Orville a great deal more than Discovery. I think the overall light-heartedness of The Orville is what makes it more appealing that DSC.

The title change can't hurt.

Looking forward to tonight's episode of The Orville. Very TOS-looking:

With a thirteen-episode season it's not likely they'll show it straight through.

We probably get another break on Thanksgiving.

Sometimes, yeah. It's nuBSG without the level of writing for character that show had.

Probably a mistake then, because, personally, my interest wanes off in a show if I don't see it at least once a week. I've had shows that I've forgotten about just because there was a long break. IMHO they should all be dumped online at once, for some quality binge watching

This may be a practice that grows into the norm.

Well, every business practice that doesn't suit every buyer is not necessarily a mistake. Date-and-time and the use of sweeps ratings periods is the way broadcast works and if it didn't work for the networks they'd stop doing it.

They do make these shows available for binging on streaming services like Hulu after broadcast. If you prefer, you could just wait until the whole series has run and then watch it all at once.

Hey, if the paint-by-numbers dramatic writing on STD is good enough for you, go to it! Enjoy the show.

Hey, if I enjoyed the various/obvious story tropes from say TNG's - Tin Man (back in the day as it were) - why shouldn't/wouldn't I still enjoy the various writing tropes across various episodes in ST: D? ;)

Star Trek has never been 'classic literature'; but it's always been entertaining to me for the most part over the past 50+ years ion whatever form it's been presented.

This is insulting. You're insinuating that people who love DSC are stupid enough to like only 'paint-by-numbers' writing. Incredible what you get away with.... this thread was closed for days because of this kind of behaviour, and you just continue it right away... I have never tried to insult you for your love for The Orville, wouldn't even cross my mind... yet you get away with it. Unbelievable.

I'm not insulted by this one bit, because it's coming from someone who loves the paint-by-numbers copycat with dick jokes that is Orville. He can look down at us from his ant-hill while we stand on the clouds all he wants.

OK, so do we start insulting each other more, or do I call in a moderator?
No need for that I hope.
But I do hope that when it happens, he or she will look back at where it starts.
Let's all just be friends. Some like DSC, some don't, same goes for the Orville. Instead of trying to insult oneanother over this, let's just either accept it or come with constructive points of view.

The problem is that there are people on each side who are now getting angry and start hurling insults at anyone who dares to want to just discuss the merits or faults or one or the other. Frankly, I see good in both and enjoy both. I'm enjoying Orville more because it has the feel of what I want from a Sci-Fi adventure. To me, DSC is improving, but still has faults in writing and the acting.

I reject your reaction due to it being too civil and I demand you disagree with me more angrily

;)

That didn't take long did it?

Very little chance of that, I'm afraid. This is not a new pattern.
Thanks, Gep, appreciate it.

Yes, HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED BUT RHYMES WITH TENNIS knows how to push people's buttons. We all know that. He also manages to do it within the rules by not openly flaming anyone. As annoying as it can be for people on the other side of the debate, saying "Nope" or posting a picture of Benedictine Cucumberpatch saying it is really not much of a justification for an infraction. You could possibly build up a case over quite a while, but those generally fail because management doesn't want to be too oppressive in setting a precedent. Once you warn one guy for posting a "Nope" picture, it becomes rather easy for others to justifiably claim that this guy's meme should be warned, or this one.

You know how I knew you were referring to? Because you make subtle little posts about it every once in a while, which could be construed as the exact same thing you're complaining about him for.

So, and I swear I've said this once or twice in the thread, maybe everyone should chill the heck out when they're comparing these two TV shows. Christ, you'all are carrying on about this like it's the American Civil War or something, and it's a show with a gelatinous crewman making dick jokes versus a show with a huggable tardigrade who travels through space. You can all do with not taking it so damn seriously.

I like both shows too. Miracle of miracles! It's a wonder I haven't beaten myself up like in Fight Club yet.

I'm not closing this thread down because you guys just take the argument over to the other thread instead. But damn it, enough already. You guys need to grow thicker skin and stop insulting each other.
