Bad Language in Discovery

On the other hand, i dont think the f-word will surface again in season 1. Maby its the last word being said in the last episodes huge cliffhanger ending, (that would be funny...)but not before.

True, but some of those were reserved for the movies, not the TV series ;) Overall, the foul language isn't needed and was always kept to a minimum. In Discovery they're throwing it at us in the first episodes. A little bit disappointing but I'm still willing to give it a chance and hope it turns out to be a great series.

DEGRA: You could have gotten it anywhere.
ARCHER: Listen to me, you son of a bitch!

Frankly, I find that line a bit harsher than just "that's fucking cool!" Archer aggressively, and out of anger, calls him a foul name, using a word many conservative folks would consider bad language. As opposed to DSC, which was simply an intensifier to an exuberant exclamation.

Sweet shit! Archer was being tortured and beaten at the time, Degra's fucking lucky "son of a bitch" was all Archer called him.
But I heard Starfleet isn't a military organization.
I heard that too. It's wrong.
They should be polite all the time, like Canadian polite.
"Canadian polite"? Sit down and watch Trailer Park Boys. That will shatter you're illusions about how "polite" Canadians are.

Yeah it was a joke....

People swear less in the future, even in the military, and Tilly's scene with Burnham and Stamets shows this. Her use of language stunned them momentarily, before they dove in. It still passes the Star Trek IV test on colorful metaphors being a rare thing, and something a Starfleet member (Kirk, in that instance), wouldn't be necessarily familiar with.

I'd be stunned in any century if I heard someone say "well, double dumbass on you"

maybe not stunned, but I would raise an eyebrow, then chuckle. Then I'd probably look for an excuse to repeat it later, but it'd still be unusual

I don't know why it should shock them. Anyone serving on a ship where a senior officer is allowed to publicly refer to other human being as "garbage" and "animals" shouldn't be shocked to hear someone say "fuck."

I took the moment that they were stunned that "she" said it.

Maybe that's not how the show meant it but that's how I saw it, not that they were stunned to hear the word.

Personally, I *agreed* with Captain America in the last Avengers movie when he called the team out for their language - and didn't like that it was then played for a laugh line about how out of touch he was.

I guess that's how out of touch *I* am. But I keep hoping that the pattern in the old Absolut ads will turn out to be right. Hopefully with an upward spiral, rather than simple repetition. I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. ;)
