Discovery Renewed for Season 2

My reading of why Enterprise failed is basically that Berman/Braga alienated all of the Trek writers by that point, meaning they had to write the first three seasons all by themselves. At the same time, the studio was heavily interfering in the "creative process" (if you can call it that) mostly for the worse. E.g., the studio was even more risk averse than Bannon/Braga (killing the idea of the first season being set on Earth, for example), which is why we got two more seasons of Voyager with a different cast rather than a real prequel. By the time the show began retooling, fans lost interest.
Agree with pretty much all of this except the part about the Beebs writing it all themselves. They didn't, but the problem was that they hired writers who, IMO, lacked imagination (except Mike Sussman). But because of the suits and the Beebs, the show had no real direction in the first two seasons which I'm sure affected the writing.

This is why the show lost most of that initial 13 million or so who tuned in for the premiere. The staff didn't come out of it's malaise and figure out a direction for the show until season 3. The rest was as you say above.

But I think that what is more important for DSC than internet polls is the amount of overall "interest" in DSC. Because so many of the people who vote that they don't like the show in those polls, are likely still avid watchers. This forum is kind of proof of that. Many of the people who profess to not like the show (and I'm not disputing that they don't), still watch. Call it the "Howard Stern Syndrome".

This is an excellent point. The show has people talking. And that is a huge key...

I actually think that "controversy" is intentional with this series. Controversy gets people like Trek fans talking. And that talking and debate is a huge measure.

If true, I just hope this doesn't signal the start of a Marvel-on-Netflix-style series spamming. How many of those series' are actually any good?

Quality over quantity, please.

I think Trek can sustain 2 shows, but probably no more. Trek is still popular, but it's not 1995 popular, so we have to pace ourselves. Especially if they alternate the airing times during the year so that only one is actively being shown at a time.

Yeah stick with one show for now, I agree.

I'd be ok with an occasional 2 or 3 part miniseries type thing that they do during the down time.

I'm not sure I'd be comfortable with their ability to do 2 full-blown series together.

I don't know...it just worries the crap out of me.

I'm fairly sure that Babylon Five was lifted by SOMEONE to create Deep Space Nine as there's ample evidence it was a concept in the hands of people who made the latter after submission by JMS.

This, by contrast, seems more like the kid who insisted they ripped him off to make the animated Tribbles sequel.
Babylon 5 was "Lord of the Rings (in SPAAACE!)" in the first place; and hell, JMS later work "Crudsade" was a real close rippoff (Time fame and some minor issues changed) of the Anime series "Space Battleship Yamato" - hell the Excalubur's main gun had all the power and pitfalls of the Yamato's Wave Motion Gun EXACTLY. :)

This is a joke, right? The most bland, lifeless Trek is "worth following"? The Trek show that was so boring, it was on the verge of cancellation every season because nobody was watching?
Again, why are you bringing ST: YOY into the discussion? ;)

I think you're off your meds, to be quite frank. And this is coming from someone who has been watching Enterprise for the past week while he works...

No one here has been posting about Star Trek Enterprise recently except for you.

Oh, but yeah - Discovery is pretty dull so far. Twenty years ago? It might have seemed modern.

Enterprise was a show chasing past success and never catching up.

Discovery is so far, IMO far more entertaining and creative,
Apart from the first two episodes Discovery has had a much stronger start than Enterprise ever did.

While I am no fan of the first two episodes of Discovery they at least had some action in them.

Unfortunately they had Klingons talking...

I have a major in DS9 and a strong minor in TNG,

I believe Disco has a stronger start than ENT, a stronger first 6 episodes than TNG, I still find the start to DS9 more entertaining, but that may just be me being a fan wanker.

Discoverys start pretty much blows Enterprise away even with the unrecognisable Klingon ships and horrible monologue.

I haven't watched TNG in a long time and I don't remember much of it, I suspect because it was bloody boring for the most part with a few noteworthy storylines here and there such as the Borg and Romulans.

Voyagers start put me to sleep and I didn't wake up until species 8472 and Seven was introduced.

As for DS9 the start was ok due to the Borg but after that it was pretty run of the mill until we started to get more Garak and Quark/Rom/Nog involvement, I also liked the Section 31 stuff as well, the Dominion War wasn't bad either, I was never really convinced about the Sisko ending though.

Right now Discovery is beating all of the previous shows in spite of the Klingon changes, the writing is sharper in episodes 3-6 and more interesting with some nice call backs already which makes for a strong start, they more than make up for the weak first two episodes that would have been better shown in flashback throughout the season.

Best the staff do what they think is best, some fans are going to complain no matter what they do.

Can I get an "AMEN!!!"?

I think you're off your meds, to be quite frank. And this is coming from someone who has been watching Enterprise for the past week while he works...
Not really called for. It's pretty clear from the context he means "following the TOS Enterprise", not the TV show, "Enterprise".

All this time he and I have been specifically talking about the TV show Enterprise. If there's a mistake it's on his part, because I've been pretty clear as to what I've been talking about.

By the way, and I know I'm in the minority-- but TOS is terrible. Fine TV for it's time but a big pile of dogs&t today, and I just watched an episode with a friend the other day (not by my choice). It was funny to consider all the criticisms of Trek past and present by those who revere that awful show, that was guilty of the same flaws, and far worse.

Nonsensical stories, character behavior and decision making that makes no sense, gaping plot holes, stories that were inconsistent with "Gene's Vision..." And that's not even including the terrible acting, laughable stories, bad writing, and childish dialog.

That's all I'll say on the subject because I know I'm probably the only Trek fan alive who feels that way.

^ if I may ask, what was the episode?

One of my favorite lines in Futurama is Fry talking about the original series-- "You know, Star Trek? 79 episodes? About 30 good ones?"

I find that fairly accurate, and I'm a huge fan of the original series.
