CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Just ran across this quote from David Gerrold in the first volume of Mark Altman & Edward Gross's The Fifty Year Mission that makes his support for Axanar seem really hard to understand:

"I knew it was time for me to stop going to conventions when I showed up at one and there were thirty people selling Tribbles. You say to them 'You don't have the right,' and they'd say "F*ck you, you made enough money off Star Trek. Now it's my turn.' This was the shift. In '72 or '73 you'd meet the fans, and they were grateful for the opportunity to meet the people who worked on Star Trek. By '75 or '76, the attitude was 'We own Star Trek now. The studio doesn't care. We do.' "

Well, well there's a picture of a skeleton bridge apparently assembled in Georgia. It's a very nice framework, but lacks all the monitors and switches, etc. This is an interesting exchange from the thread:

So I hear that Axanar when it is filmed wil be filmed in Cali...Will the bridge in Georgia be digitally scanned to use in that endeavor?

We hope to shoot at least one day in Georgia and then more days of bridge scenes, depending on how much we raise. (my emphasis)
After seeing $1.4 million wanish into theen air, I'm not ready to dig into my wallet. Don't know about anybody else, of course.

What does a FAN FILM need with millions of dollars?
He still doesn't get it and maybe it's because everyone now knows that if you're going to work with Alec you expect to be payed for it. It's a FAN FILM, you get your buddies, a bunch of beer and with the right mix of folks you create a FAN FILM.

Looks like their Open House cook out attracted all of maybe 15 folks.......fundraising might be getting tighter.

Pft -- everybody knows it takes at least two million dollars to construct a Bridge. Duh. ;)

Current state of the play room/club house...........lot of holes.........

What's the big deal - as I recall it was sitting just as assembled in the Valencia studio for over 18 months prior to them moving it. Leaving is assembled is probably less damaging then leaving the various pieces stacked against a wall.

(IE given Axanar's 'track record' this partial set being assembled means nothing in terms of "Oh look they're going to produce something soon." because we all know actually FINISHING Axanar is FAR from the top thing on Alec Peter's agenda.)

A friend of mine posted a pic of her in the Captains chair from yesterday. Apparently her boyfriend is a donor and knew members of the production. I really didn’t want to get into it with her (as there had been much drinking when she responded) so all I said was that it was a cool set even if the legal issues were a little offputting. Neither of us pressed the issue so... *shrugs*

As @Maurice points out, the real irony here is that Robert Heinlein was less than pleased that David Gerrold was selling flat cats at conventions without the right to do so.

Er...tribbles.

He just had an open house at the OCW studios this past weekend. Anyone who came had to chip in $10 for food... oh year and there was stuff you could buy too.. smh

But he has been in the new facility how many months and it looks like NOTHING has been done to the set.

Being fair the recent “fan event” *cough*freelabour*cough* saw much of the bridge finally painted. Previously I think it was only really the one console.

At this point I have to assume Alec’s only hanging onto the bridge as the closest thing to a tangible asset he got from this whole carry on. We know the other sets are either disassembled or were at least partially binned when they left for Atlanta. If Alec has any real plans for the set though he’s clearly not in any hurry to actually move them forward (no change from the previous studio then). At this point it seems obvious the bridge is just a cool thing to have. He might be kidding himself that he can build a business with it, but that’s not happening

Not that I should judge. If I had the money I’d totally build my own bridge to hang out on. I’d just use my own money and, you know, bother finishing it.

Interestingly, back before the lawsuit I remember them talking about monitors for all those gaping holes in the bridge, which I recall a fan had donated to the set. I wonder if they’re still around or if they never made it as far as the studio.

They had this whole blog post on why they were using actual monitors instead of digitally compositing over a bluescreen display; and how it would be so much better, ditto for the touchscreen-keyboards.
Looks like the new "air-display" is all the rage, eh?
