It was like that before as well. For whatever reason, the prosthetic lips (why the hell do they make Klingon lips more full now) don't seem to align properly with her natural lips. Maybe it's just the process of speaking naturally pulls them out of being flush.
Also, I suspect, in past episodes, the Klingon ships have been so damn dark we haven't had a really good look at the makeup. In contrast, this prison ship was quite a bit brighter -- all the better (or worse) to show off any flaws in the prosthetics.

Makes sense. Stamets is turning into a Guild Navigator.

Something like that, yeah.

I got that impression too. The Stamets in the mirror basically did everything the real-world Stamets did, just with about a 5-second lag. The mirror Stamets did nothing extra, or nothing less, to indicate it was a different individual with different motivational tendencies. So, yeah, I would say some kind of temporal phase-shift. Just can't remember if the phase shift was noticeable when he and the medical guy were having their conversation. If it was, why didn't he notice?

I think he noticed.... Not sure why I think that.

So, has anyone checked out the iO9 livestream video covering this episode? I am listening to it now. Much like how I tried listening to TrekYards reviewing this show, I am now wondering why I still bother listening/reading to iO9 cover Discovery. Do I just want to "choose my pain"? More probably its just that I love having new Star Trek to watch and discuss. Anyway, Katharine Trendacosta - taking Lorca to task on leaving Mudd behind - says (overriding her co-host's statement) that there was no listening device and thus no proof that Mudd did anything wrong, thus justifying her apparent continued hatred of Lorca and all things Discovery. This is a prime example of predetermined bias destroying the credibility of the reviewer....but I will probably continue listening.

Yeah, I kind of felt that way too. Though I did think it kinda cool when Tilly said it, I thought it went overboard when Stamets echoed her line right back. I'm hoping now that the writers have gotten the f-bomb out of the way, we won't be revisiting another any time soon...
I can't agree with either of you. Yeah an f-bomb isn't exactly family friendly, but it wasn't used in a derogatory or offensive way. It was simply used to add emphasis to the Tilly's expression. And Stamets echoed it because he felt the same. I would argue that this is the kind of use of profanity that should be enabled by not being on a network. It isn't gratuitous or harmful or anything like that, but it allows our characters to be more human, more expressive. Complain about violence against innocents, insulting language, prejudices, etc. but laud the positive use of language. After all, the words themselves are not inherently good or bad, it is how they are used that provide meaning.

This episode has cemented Discovery as not only a worthy successor to the Trek franchise-- for good-- but as one of the best shows on... well whatever we call it now.

I am 1000% onboard with all the visual changes, to hell with the cartoony cardboard props, the kid-friendly technicolor TOS with it's terrible stories, one-dimensional characters, and third-rate acting. It was a kid's show.

Discovery is Truer Trek than TOS.

So was this again a case where they actually mean 'sapient' when they say 'sentient'? I mean a goldfish is most likely sentient.

My thoughts on Episode 1x05 cont'd

Oh Saru you are like a walking talking Burnham detector now, he should give those ganglia a sedative or something stronger.

Lorcas got quite a strong grip hasn't he Mudd, "my name is Mudd" line takes me back to Looney Tunes cartoons, I believe it was immortalised by none other than Wile E Coyote and I have changed my avatar accordingly, at least until we get an actual shot of a toilet on Discovery (unlikely) or Orville (its coming). :techman:

I already want Lorca to shoot Mudd, love how Lorca isn't buying what Ash Tyler is selling from the start, seven months is a long time to survive in such a situation, spoke to soon as Lorca just confirmed to anyone listening that his ship is the one they are looking for.

Why do I get the feeling Burnham is going to actually end up as the navigator sooner or later, was the earlier dream literal foreshadowing.

It is pretty fucking cool, shame we know that it wont work out in the long run, hang on a minute the navigator could even be Saru with his heightened senses.

Surprised we are getting Lorcas back story so soon, then again there aren't that many episodes in this first season so I guess they need to move things a long a bit quicker.

It appears Saru is a gigantic hypocrite, had a suspicion he would be, its easy to question others actions in hindsight not so easy to have to make them himself.

Like the sound of the Klingon weapons and the green splat when they kill, after seeing Tylers beatdown on the leader I wonder if he really is Voq or not, I guess that's the point to keep us guessing, very strange that Lorca didn't shoot to kill the female leader, he had no trouble taking out the other Klingons.

Would have been better if they had destroyed the Birds of Prey and the prison ship, far too many people have seen and know about the Discovery.

Oh Stamets you trooper you, cant believe I was right, I thought it more likely to be Burnham though, seems Saru has had to eat a large portion of humble pie and its about time.

Then we get the mirror shot, no surprise there will be consequences for what Stamets did, could he have jumped them into the mirror universe by accident, lack of promo for next week makes me wonder.

Bloody great episode, solid 9 all the way through. :techman::beer:

I gave up watching Skipper and Gilligan, I mean Captain Foley and MumbleMumble. They have their options. Fine. They clearly had a show in mind that they wanted and they did not get it.

I noticed this as well. In fact, at first I wasn't entirely sure that it was L'Rell. It sort of looked like her, but something was off with the makeup on her lower lip that I hadn't noticed in previous episodes.
I was confused about that too. Somehow she looked really different here and first I thought this was a different character.

With the nose, the lips, the dark skin and the cannibalism there are some pretty unfortunate design choices going on with these Klingons... I really don't understand how anyone didn't see this...

It's been commented on in reviews by quite a few fan groups, how the designers didn't catch it though is ridiculous.

The original Klingons being a mix of black face and yellow peril (read the Errand of Mercy page on MA) was bad enough in the mid 60's, but the design of the 2017 version steers too close to some unfortunate stereotypes for comfort.

My God, you're right.

Who was played by Doug Jones!

By far the best Trek series start through the first 5 episodes in my opinion.
I don't know. To me, TOS still has that claim. The first two episodes of DSC were, IMO, badly written and served to make the main character the least liked. The third was OK but a stumble to get started, and only the past two episodes started to catch a bit of steam.

But that's my opinion on it. TOS still holds as best first season, IMO.

The latter three yes the first two not so much which is a shame really, just imagine if the Klingons had spoken English from the start with Klingon subtitles and had used recognisable updated D7's and Birds of Prey at the battle of the binary stars.
